    Hi,

I am assuming my PS3's laser is not working. Symptoms: I put in the dvd, and it takes it in, and nothing happens. No error message or anything.

What possibly could be wrong? Is my diagnosis correct?

    Thank you.

  • mjnps3 Mar 13, 2009

I am going to try a new laser. I have tried a restore and no luck. Drive takes disk. makes noise but disk does not spin. Everywhere I read says it is the laser. can it be anything else?

  • slimshadie1 Apr 02, 2009

Im having the same problem. Started freezing up then later it just stopped reading all together. Im not getting a error message or anything. It takes the disc then nothing. If the lens is not defective then what is the problem?

If you don't hear it spin up to read the the spindle motor may be dead .
and it's probably not the LASER . The 405 nm laser is a little
pricey . The spindle is motor is much cheaper .
Repair cost can very greatly. It will depend if its the laser or the motor is failing

Hope that help a little

If a ps3 does not spin a disk it is because the laser is to weak to detect a disk so it does not spin the disk . replace your laser and you will be fine. in rare cases the IC controller chip goes bad and nothing happens but that is rare. I repair game systems everyday and this is a common problem.

Brown Clip KES-400A KEM-400AAA laser - Is it new?

For those who are replacing a PS3 Laser, particularly the KEM-400AAA or KES-400A (these are the same laser, one just has the deck included) you will often see online that there are refurbished “white clip” lasers that have a high failure and “brand new” brown clip lasers that are made by a third party and have almost 0 failure rate.

As someone who repairs PS3s, I would like to but an end to this *MYTH*

There is **no such thing** as a BRAND NEW PS3 laser expect for those made by Sony.

Sony does not sell parts to repair the systems because they do not want customers attempting repairs themselves.

Any web site claiming to be selling NEW brown clip lasers is outright **LYING** to you.

If any third party company did make PS3 lasers they would be promptly sued by Sony.

How do I know all of this?

Well, if these THIRD PARTY lasers are new, and being third party, not made by Sony, why have I frequently opened PS3 consoles with warranty stickers intact, only to find a BROWN CLIP laser?

The answer is because Sony makes these brown clip laser as well as the white clip lasers.

The quality of the lasers depends on the care taken in refurbishing them, NOT the color of the clip.

Find a reliable source and you will be OK.

I should note that I have used both Brown clip and White clip lasers and have seen both fail. Unfortunately these products have a high failure rate, this is simply unavoidable.

Find a retailer that guarantees the item for at least 30 days or that guarantees the item is tested before being sent out. If you do get a bad laser, make sure they will refund you.

Where can i buy disc drive for ps3

Ok for a start, the Blu ray drives are all over ebay but it is very important you get the right one.
For 40 and 60Gb consoles you will need a drive that has the KEM-400AAA laser and deck inside and the logic board is screwed to the outside of the drive case.
For 80Gb and higher you will need a drive that has the KEM-410ACA laser and deck inside it, The logic board on these drives is actually inside the casing.
Some newer 40Gb PS3's also had the newer type dual laser drive too but they are rare.
The table below shows the standard Blu ray models. Any model newer than the CECHH-** should be using the newer dual laser setup. That would include CECHL,CECHJ,CECHK,CECHM etc etc

Blu-ray lens model Description PS3 models KEM-400AAA The original with single lens (includes mount) CECHA-CECHE KES-400AAA Single lens using cheaper parts. CECHG KEM-410ACA There are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray (includes mount) CECHH KES-410ACA There are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray. CECHH KES-450ACA There are two lens, one for CD/DVD, and another one for Blu-ray. CECH-20xx
One last thing to remember is that you need the logic board that is currently screwed to YOUR drive. This then needs to be swapped to the replacement drive as it is paired to the motherboard and without it your system will never read discs again.

Hope this helps

Will not paly games or videos

Replace the drive mechanism (including laser). Open it up first to check the type, then check ebay (KEM/KES-400A/410A is the most common drive mechanism). Price is around 50usd.

Okay, this is a REALLY common problem. It's more likely than not that dust is on your lens. Best bet is to buy a Laser Eye Cleaner disc and hope that fixes the problem. If not than you will have to contact sony. If your still under warranty they will fix it for free. if the warranty has expired, then they will charge you a repair fee

I have just replaced the laser and the disk sensor because it would not read any disk i put in. now i have replaced these parts it still dosent read the disk !!!

I'm sorry to say, Richard, but based on our professional experience -- most of the lasers on the market for the Playstation 3, model KES-400A or KEM-400-AAA, are either used or refurbished. If you replaced the laser and it's not working, most companies offer a short return policy. Call them ASAP and exchange or refund the laser.

PS3 cd drive spindle moter is broken!! need replacement

You have to use the same one. There are only two kinds: single laser, dual laser. (kes-400a / kes-410)

The laser is the problem, not the motor. the motor won't spin because the laser has to be in working condition. sounds weird, I know....but that's just the way it is.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Ps3 willnot play games or dvd

Hello Mr. Lawley
When you put in a disc, listen for the disc to start spinning. If you do not hear that then the laser and/or the spindle have blown out. You will have to get your Blu-Ray player serviced by a pro or Sony. Sony may fix it for free. They know that the drives are failing. So call them first. If you know how to do it yourself, you will need part KEM-400AAA / KES-400A if it is not spinning. If it's spinning and not reading the laser may be dusty or need replacement. The laser by it's self is part number is KES-400AAA. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to hit my "Ask Me" button.

I hope this helps! Good luck to you.
