Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera

Master Reset on a Canon EOS 400d without starting the camera

My question is basically as stated in the sumary, how- if possible, do I perform a master reset/cold boot/reboot of the camera without using the on screen menu?

-Is there for example a set of buttons I should/could press at the same time when switching the camera on?

First of all, thanks for your response!

    I can definetely do so.

The problem is that the camera does not start.

Tests I've done regarding that so far are:

1: Recharge main battery - no result

2: Remove battery, insert battery again - no result.

3: Try to start the camera connected to a computer via USB with, and without main battery - no result.* (Of course this has been tested using different USB-ports and different USB-controllers on both my test computers.) - no result.

4: Try to start the camera without the smaller backup/date/time-keeping battery (cr2016). - no result.

5: Try to start the camera without the smaller backup/date/time keeping battery (cr2016) with camera connected to computer. - no result.

Regarding 3)* - I have tested it both on my windows xp pro 64bit workstation and my ubuntu 8.10 laptop.
The most interresting part here (AFAIC) is that the ubuntu system log- wich usually is very very detailed gets no input at all when the camera is connected.

Everything I use with the camera (except the cf-memory card) is standard canon-products, no third part battery/charger etc.

    Hi,

Well I realized that the questions here normally hold a different standard.

First of all I won't hold it against you and I had already figured out
that it has to be a power-problem and contacted my local
Canon-dealer/shop, so I also agree with you on this.

Asking on here was basically a last resort for finding out if there was
any way at all that I could do something I had not already tested.

Anyways thanks for your help in the matter.

Can you explain why you can't or don't want to use the on-screen menu? What happens when you simply start the camera normally?

First, thank you for providing such detailed information about what you have already tried! This is a refreshing change from most questions asked on this site.

Second, I have bad news. All of the symptoms you describe are consistent with a power problem within the camera. No amount of pressing different buttons or loading different software as the camera stars will help it start if it simply isn't getting power from the battery.

You can reset the firmware by loading firmware onto the CF card. As part of the boot process the camera checks to see if there is a special file on the CF card that then updates the firmware on the camera. See this link for more details.

Finally, as a new Expert on this site I'm trying very hard to only provide answers that "fix" the problem so I can get FixYa ratings and maintain my high rating. Unfortunately, this isn't a "fixable" problem if the real problem is a power problem inside the mechanics of the camera. I hope you won't hold that against me when you rate the answer I've given. Thank you.

1.Remove the battery, lens and CF card. Allow the camera to sit without power for 20 minutes and then reinsert a fully charged battery.
2.Turn the camera on and push the shutter button as if you were taking a picture.
3. If you don't get the error message reattach the lens and insert the CF card.

My canon 400d, suddenly stopped working, it does not start and no power at all. pls help

Such symptom indicate a malfunction on the DC/DC voltage converter circuitry, and the camera has two of them located in different boards.

In order to perform a correct diagnostics and repair of it, it is necessary to open such camera and perform it by a qualified camera repair technician.

If it's under warranty, I do recommend you to send it back to make valid the warranty.

If not, then you hav the options of pay for its repair, or do it yourself if you are willing tgo open it and perform some basic diagnostics of the failure. You will needtools to do it, which includes the usage of a soldering iron.

Best regards,

Try reformatting the card. I don't know if this camera allows you to do a low level format or not. If you can do that.

Camera won't turn on

Try replacing the date/time battery located in the main battery compartment. Also, simultaneously remove the lens. This will be like a master reboot for the camera. Replace the date/time coin battery, the main battery (freshly charged) and lastly the lens.

If this doesn't work, send it in for service. If you are just slightly beyond your one year warranty, Canon may allow a grace period especially if you can provide a receipt. If you can't find a receipt, give them the approximate date of purchase when you send in the camera. You will need to call them or set up service online.

Hope this helps!

Date on pictures taken and movie shooting on canon eos 400d

The EOS Digital Rebel, EOS Digital Rebel XT and EOS Digital Rebel XTi do not support stamping the date and time on the image.

It is not possible to record the date and time as part of the image at the time the picture is taken. However, the date and time is captured in the EXIF information of the image at the point of capture. It is possible to print the image with the date and time via printing software. Please see the documentation for the software package that you use for printing images for the proper procedure.

Frustrated with learning the Canon rebel xti

I can tell you that the XTi is a very advanced DSLR camera and can't be learned overnight. I've been shooting EOS cameras since 1986 and it still took me about 2 weeks to master it. The manual that came with it is very informative and should provide a basic understanding of its functions. I'd recommend doing a Google search for free photo tips and training. I've got numerous links that I refer to from time to time when I need a refresher.
