Re: configure router

You haven't specified the version no of the router. If you would turn the router upside down, you can see the model no and the version no right next to it. Although, the configuration of all the versions would be the same, you still need to make sure it has the latest firmware if its a older version. Here is what we need to do... 1. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router 2. Connect the desktop to the port 4 of the router 3. With the router turned on, push the reset button on the router and hold it for 20-30 seconds. 4. Power Cycle: Unplug the power from the router and the modem. Wait 30 seconds and turn on the modem first. Wait 1-2 minutes till the ligts on the modem are steady. Turn on the router. 5. Wait till the lights on the router are all turned on (takes around 1 minute) 6. On the desktop, open your web browser 7. In the address bar, type 8. It must prompt you for a username and password 9. Skip the username and type the password - 'admin' 10. That must bring up the setup page of the router 11. There is tab on the top right corner - 'Status'. Click on that 12. In the status tab, you must see the internet ip address -, which is the ip address provided by the modem 13. Go back to the setup tab 14. In the setup tab, you would see the local ip address = 15. Change it to 16. Click on Save Settings (scroll down to the lower end of the screen to see this option) 17. Wait for 30 seconds and close the web browser 18. Power Cycle again (refer step 4) 19. Now internet must work on the desktop 20. By default, the network name (SSID) of the linksys router is - 'linksys' 21. You can go to the laptop(i assume it has windows xp), and try to connect to this network by - right click on the wireless icon in the system tray (on the right bottom corner of the screen) and click on 'view available wireless networks' 22. You must see 'linksys' as one of the available wireless networks 23. Try connecting to it and you laptop must work Those steps are generalised and you might get stuck in exceptional cases. If this does not work, please initiate a chat session with any of the experts, if this does not work, because this may require some advanced troubleshooting which would not be possible using those short messages. Good Luck

Maybe it has something to do with the internet protocol of your service provider. You didn't mention anything about your internet service provider. If you have Verizon DSL and you have a PPPOE internet protocol, you need to contact the technical support team of your service provider because they need to walk you through on how to configure the westell 6100 to bridge mode. I think if you connect a pc directly to the westell 6100 and open up a browser then go to, you will be directed to the modem's GUI where you can make the necessary changes on the settings of the modem.

Switching DSL Modems

Your dsl line stays the same. you're only changing your dsl equipment.

if you are not able to go online using the 327w, you might need to have it configured depending on the type of connection that you have. if you are using PPPoE (which means you enter a username and password on the modem to connect to verizon) you need your 327w configured for pppoe. but if you are using DHCP connection, any modem or routers should be plug and play.

Most verizon customers from the west coast uses DHCP while those on the east coast uses PPPoE.

You can call tech support to make sure which type of connection you are using.

Setup Wireless Router to Westell 6100 modem

Your Wireless router should have come with a CD. Insert the CD into your computer and follow it step by step. If it did not come with it here is a basic wiring setup.
From wall jack to Westell modem, From modem to uplink port on Max G router.
Reboot Westell modem. T
Everything should auto-configure unless you need a username and password for your DLS. If so you will need to program this into your router.

Can not setup modem:Westell 6100 to router:Linksys WRT54G

i think the best way is to describe to you the physical setup first. so you have a computer, a modem, and a router. the setup should be like this: from the walljack, the phonecable is connected to the 6100, make sure there are no micro filters connected between the walljack and the phone line because it will not allow you to connect to the dsl. from the modem, the data/internet cable at the back of it, using an ethernet cable, should be connected to the router. and at the back of the router E1 to E4, another ethernet cable is connected there and the other end of the cable is to be connected to your computer. you are right in bridging the modem, the reason for that is because both the westell 6100 and router have GUI's or Graphical User Interfaces, in short, they each have their own virtual brain. you will not have a connection if both of them have this GUI thing, so you need to bridge your westell 6100, so that the only GUI active is the routers. to bridge the modem you may need assistance from tech support of your ISP provider. assuming that's done, light status in your 6100 should have a solid DSL light. for the router, it should have lights in WAN, WLAN if you want to connect wirelessly and E1 to E4, whichever ethernet port you're using for a wired connection. you have to access the GUI of the router to make sure you have a routable WAN IP Address. As for the IP address in your computer, it should be a type of ip address. this is the LAN IP Address. Basically you need to have routable WAN and LAN IP Addresses to be able to connect online. you will need to configure the GUI of your router to be able to do this. for that you may need assistance from tech support of the router or if you can follow the instructions in the manual, by all means do so. the most important thing in this setup is bridging the modem.

I using the linksys 150n router on my desktop in the basement of my house, I have a verizon dsl supplied external modem westell 327w in the office that's working fine. how do i get 150n to work?

  • The router needs to be configured with the settings required by your ISP which is Verizon.
  • The modem should be connected to the Internet port of your router.
  • Verify with Verizon if you're connection is DHCP or PPPoE. If it is PPPoE then you should have a username and password from Verizon.
Please update me about this to assist you further with the installation of your router.

Cannot connect using westel 327 from verizion --lights blinking(dsl)

If they are charging you for the use of the westel, just tell them you don't need it. I would keep using your other modem that works.

Your modem will need an RJ11 or RJ45 connector on the back, which should be connected to your router via a relevant cable. To get into you routers settings, you will need to type it's IP address in your internet browser(eg or similair. When in the settings look for DHCP settings and enable DHCP so as the router can allocate your pc's an automatic IP address. The modem should already have it's settings and distribute the connection via your router. Make sure you enable wireless also, but once you have it running make sure it is atleast WEP secured, this you will find in the security settings, you will need set the pc's also with the same encryption numbers that the router gives you or they will not connect. Go to each of your pc's network cards in Control panel>Network Connections and right click to properties. On the TCP/IP line highlight it and click properties and ensure obtain ip address is ticked and click ok. Make sure also that you use the connection and file sharing wizard to set up your pc's to share files if required. Lastly, i would of recommended purchasing a adsl modem/router as it's all built in one unit and easier to set up and troubleshoot when a problem occurs.
