I have an older Magnavox TV. The sound button makes static noise and will only turn up to a low level. The program sounds are hard to make out due to the static. I have pulled the knob out, cleaned it and replaced but did not help.
You need to get inside the knob and clean it well with some kind of denatured alcohol. it that did not work, check if you have any loose or cold soldering joints. if that did not help you need to change the knows..good luck

Check the speaker/s first. If found OK; check and replace the damaged component/s at its audio output section circuit. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. increase the volume to max level .close yourself to TV speaker and listen.if could not hear anything, just turn it off and turn on if you could not hear at least pop sound from the speaker, you will have to replace new speaker.if you are able to hear Buzz noise or very low sound ,sound circuit has to be repaired.
You either have a cold solder joint in your horizontal deflection circuits or your or in your horizontal output circuit. please be careful due to the fly-back transformer still holds power even unplugged until you discharge it.( ground it out). Hope this helps.
You can possibly diagnose the problem by trying a different speaker,it does not have to be the same shape as the original but it has to have the same amount of resistance (ohms),radio shack might have one that you can try or one from a broken radio ,if you use one with different value it might not sound as loud but we are trying to see if you hear the static or is gone. You need to unplug the unit from the wall, remove the back cover and locate the speaker, disconect the wires and reconect the one to try then plug the set and turn it on,the antenna will need to be reconected too.Is the most simple test you can do without getting in too deep.Let Us know how it goes by a way of a new question or if you need more information.
