Gear clicking in rear

I have a John Deere Gator 12 volt riding kids toy. It sounds like the gear teeth are worn and all it will do is sit and click when you try to go. Is there a way to fix this problem? Can the Gator be taken apart and how? Thanks.

Does it go in reverse without clicking? If so then the teeth are worn over to one side. If thats it you can swap the motor and gearboxes from side to side, left to right and right to left, and get a little more time out of them. Otherwise you will need to replace the gearboxes. There are plenty of places to buy them from and they are not hard to change. No special tools. Best source of info I have found is www.modifiedpowerwheels.com They have lots of info and its all free.

Do you hear a click when it stops working? if you do its the thermal switch tripping, this would probably indicate a bad motor, lift up the rear end of the vehicle and check to make sure that both wheels are spinning in all of the gears

I have a peg-perego john Deere gator hpx 12 volt new out of the bo. I have 1 speed forward, however no reverse and no second speed forward. Any suggestions?

did you remove the high speed lockout? Its red and its on the shifter itself and c an be removed with a screwdriver, otherwise it sounds like one of the motors might be bad, you'll have to remove the dump box to test this, just disconnect one motor and try the gears, then reconnect it then disconnect the other motor then test the gears, this should tell you which motor is bad

Peg Perego Gator Ride On Toy

Sounds like the gears are stripped. If a bunch of teeth are missing, only the high speed gear will spin the gears fast enough to move the gator forward. I just bought a used one and found it pretty easy to tear apart and diagnose as similar issue. The gear boxes, located inboard of each wheel contain plastic gears and strip relatively easy if the shifter is moved , during motion from forward to reverse.
