Its hanged and can't be taken out by mechanical pressure. The expert will need to un-screw its upper plate and hence after rotating motor you will get your solution.

My dvd-cd drive (sdvd8441) will not recognize dvd or cd. It also will not stay closed. If I have it enabled my computer acts crazy, but if I disable it everything seems to go back to normal. Do I need a...

First try this:
  • Start>Computer RIGHT CLICK on Computer
  • Properties>Device Manager
  • Go to DVD/CD-ROM Drives; Locate SDVD8441; Instead of Disable, select UNINSTALL.
  • Reboot
  • Allow Windows to rediscover.
  • You may wish to be online so Windows can download the latest driver for you as part of the re-installation process.
  • Don't be alarmed if Windows rediscovers your drive as QSI SDW-082k -- that is just another name for the same drive (SDVD8441).

If that doesn't work, try re-installing the firmware. Download it from Gateway at http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20535&dscr=Philips%20DVD%20Drive%20Firmware%20Update%20for%20Gateway%20MX6428%20Notebook%20&&uid=30066654&uid=30066662 or Google PhillipsPA49.exe to find another trusted source.

No TMP or TPM has problem

do you have access to another dvd rom? you might order one and use it to test/ return it if it dosnt work.

you could always use an external rom.

cd/dvd roms have their own firmware (like bios) that could be damaged on yours.

My cd rom wont close

There's a problem with the mechanism itself. Try to bring it to a technician for service and repair, but if it'll cost you much more than a new one, replace it! =)

Ciao and Good Luck! =)

Unlocking my region code

Open My Computer, right click the DVD icon and select properties,
click hardware tab at the top.
Select your DVD player from the list, click the Properties button, and then the DVD Region tab. Select the Country you want to change the region code to and click OK.
It should tell you how many changes you are allowed. When you have used them all it stays locked at the last one you chose.

Replacing dvd/cd-rom drive on gateway laptop

Depends - what gateway? the one you listed under?? Because the model you posted with already came with a DVD drive.

Reply with the model of your machine and i can probably find you help. Gateway usually has instructions on their site.

The instructions for the M305CRV are here.

That model can use pretty much any standard laptop CD if you dont mind the face not matching get a generic drive like the Sony CRX880a at
