Question about Sony KP-53HS30 53" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Rear Projection TV Sony KPFS 53 M31 :Red screen, 6 times blinking

Hi benmur,
melnavz send me to you for more details, I dont't reallly know where to look.
The problem: Only a red screen at start, then turn off after few second (because the red is getting too bright). The stnad bye led blinks 6 times repeatedly.

I did resold around the mother and the board on the neck of the tube and solde a few point, but did nothing really then I try to shake it (looking for bad contact, nothing again...
I found between the blue and green tube a plastic box with 6 poties, 3 are for the power of each light bulb and the other three for the definition of the picture.
Playing with those tree first I was able to get a reasonable good picture but with a light red shadow. So the red bulb is not overpowering and we have a resonable picture.
But he problem is not solve .
Before finding this "by pass" solution I saw the stand bye led 6 times blinking.
Diagnosis: Low B OCP/OVP(Overcurrent/aver Voltage).Possible causes :5+line is overloaded.(A,B boards), +5 line is shorted.
The sony is a KPFS 53 M31, and I'm not sure that I found the right diagnosis, Can You Confirm if this diagnosis for this TV is right?
Should I buy the schematic for this TV and check what?

Thanks for you help..

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

For any TV model with a CRT or 3 tubes and your description of "red is getting too bright" indicates that the controller transistor or power pack IC for that gun/CRT/tube has shorted. Another possible indicator would be fine diagonal white lines and an overly high contrast.

Often this controller transistor or power pack IC would be heatsinked and located at a squarish PCB (printed circuit board) right at the very small end of the CRT/tube. Corrective action would require replacement.

If the "plastic box with 6 poties" you described would look like the image below, then that would be the Focus/Screen Adjustment for the three tubes.

Unfortunately I do not have a schematic or a service manual hence I could not be more specific. Should you be interested, a service manual is available here.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Sony kp51 ws500 red screen, 8 blinks

The 8 blinks is pointing to a bad flyback transformer and may be common with this set. (We have one too.)

Please count the blinks. It should be a repeating count with a pause. This will indicate the problem circuit and allow us to give you details.
