The proper procedure for installing a new card is:

    - remove old card drivers

    - shut off pc and replace the card

    - boot pc and install new drivers

You haven't clarified you've installed new drivers and that may simply resolve the problem at this point. 95, 98, and ME will hang on to your old drivers so you can reboot into Safe Mode, access the "Control Panel" and then "Hardware Manager" and open the video display category and right-click and remove all your old video drivers. Then reboot to your new drivers.

This means that your video drivers are not installed properly. First find out what video board or on-board video you have. the download and install the correct drivers

First uninstall all the graphics drivers you have installed. Restart the computer and install the current graphics driver if required.

Go to display properties --- settings---- color and select the desired option and click "advanced"

on the next screen under "general" ---- "compatibility" select the 2nd option " apply new display settings without restarting"

Your problem may be solved.

My monitor gives 16-bit color at 640x480, but will only offer 256 colors at 1024x768 -- and only displays 16 colors when I select that... In order to access resolution options, I have to go into Advanced...

The monitor has no influence here - something is wrong with your video card: either its driver is missing (or corrupted) or the video chip has failed.
Uninstall all the drivers for the video(except the generic VGA one), from Programs and Device Manager
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/f/open-device-manager-windows-7.htm
and reboot several times then go to Dell
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
select your pc and get the correct driver.
If that doesn't fixes it then the video chip has failed, you will need to buy a new video card.

Changing my colour on desktop

You'll have to run the game in compatibility mode, with the color depth set to 256 colors.

You do this by right clicking on the executable of your game. click on Properties. Compatibility tab. Click the check to run compatibilty w/ Window 98, and set the color depth to 256 Color. That should work! Happy gaming.

Unable to change color depth...

Ok I think i found your problem. You don't need to install any drivers.

Switch your display to 256 colors To switch your display to 256 colors
Some games and other software programs require that your monitor be set to 256 colors, or they run better in 256 colors. Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. For those that don't, follow the steps below if you want to switch the display temporarily while the game or program is running.
  1. On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Select the Run in 256 colors check box.
  • The screen will revert to your default color quality when you close the program.
  • Try switching to 256 colors if your software program shows the wrong color or the graphics redraw slowly.
  • If your software program appears in a small window in the center of your screen, you can increase its size by changing your screen resolution temporarily. Follow the procedure above, but in step 3 select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your screen resolution will revert to its previous resolution when you close the program.
  • The Compatibility tab is available only for programs or games located on your computer's hard disk. It is not available if the program is stored on a floppy disk, compact disk, or a network.
Please rate this if it fix your issue

Need help with ultimate Mahjongg. wont run?

Technical Questions Q. Ultimate Mahjong refuses the run at all

A. Make sure you have DirectX 9 installed, this is a games library created by Microsoft, and can be downloaded freely from here. If it still does not work then you can contact our technical support at support@inertiasoftware.com.

Q. Ultimate Mahjong runs slowly on my computer how can I make it faster?

A. Ultimate Mahjong probably runs slowly because of your graphics card, make sure you have the latest drivers for it installed and that you have DirectX 9. Trying changing between 2D and 3D modes, and see which runs the fastest. Finally, many people find that Ultimate Mahjong runs faster in a 16 bit color mode, so try changing your display settings.

Q. Ultimate Mahjong will not run and keeps telling me I have an incompatible display, what should I do?

A. You should try changing your display settings, some video cards cannot run Ultimate Mahjong in certain color modes. Try setting your display properties to a 16 bit color mode, this usually solves the problem.

Display Problem

First things is to see if the problem is

  1. memory related(these all in one units have a problem that way.)
  2. Run everesthome and update chipset<NORTHBRIDGE>Google the northbridge for updates.
  3. nVidia GeForce FX Go5700 problem.Make sure all updates for graphic drivers have been installed, then attach an external monitor, the unit should support svga/dvi/s-video. Your graphics card has 128MB dedicated so if the external display responds the same way as internal monitor it's the video card or chipset.

I just reinstalled windows 98se but it only has 16 bit color is their a way to get 32 bit color

You need to install the Video driver for your graphics card to get full use of your display card with full feature.
  • There might be a motherboard CD shipped with your PC, it might include driver for your all devices.
  • Just put that CD and install the required drivers.
  • If you don't have any CD like that, then you should go to your manufacturer's site and make download driver for your device for Windows 98.

Thanks
Iqbal
