Question about GPS Devices

1 Answer

I'm looking for a portable gps that can accurately mark where I'm standing. Later, I'd like to be able to plug the unit into a pc and determine the closest address to the point I set. Is this realistic? Any suggestions?

GPS problem IN FREELANDER

Is it indash unit or portable? if indash then you need to locate the GPS Antenna and make sure it is plugged in and not obstructed by any metal.
If portable then try holding down the reset button on the back for ten seconds, If this doesn't help the unit will need servicing.

My garmin nuvi 205 will only display a black screen with the word garmin on it. I have powercycled multiple times but that is all it will do

It may either need a screen reset, or a cpu reset.
To reset the screen, Push the upper left hand corner of the screen (under the pwer slide-switch), while you toggle the power switch on AND HOLD THAT SPOT FOR MORE THAN 15 seconds, or until you see a display that says to Calibrate the Screen.
If you get there, there will be a black dot to touch (with the back of a pen) accurately...in different locations of the screen. This determines how it will react to your touches when operating.
(I did not know about this, and just used my finger to touch the dots. Well I could not see other pages later, and I thought the unit is broken).
Then shut it off, and reboot. The Garmin comes on with black background...loads the software...then the warning notice-Agree- to press.
If you cannot get either of these, your unit is not loading its software.
If your unit has a "Reset Button on the bottom of the unit" . Do not use sharp pointed objects.
If no Reset Button... lastly, Slide and HOLD On/Off switch to the left FOR 8-10 seconds.
Wait a bit, and try switching on again. All this is per their web site User Manual for the 200series.
Good luck.

Megellan Maestro 4210 gps slow to find current location

I recommend you to reset it . Resetting should solve this problem .

Here is how to reset your Maestro :

1:Locate the button marked "Reset" on the left, right or bottom of the unit.
2:Using a thin object, such as a paper clip, depress the button for two to three seconds. The unit should reset.
3:If the unit does not reset, immediately press the button again and hold it for up to 10 seconds.

My garmin Street Pilot just went dead on me.

I got back into my vehicle today to go get my mom at the airport. I plugged the unit In & It worked. I suspect that It is the battery. After I shut off the engine I got the message that says do you want to still operate on battery power. I clicked ok but it said low battery. So now I have it charging by using my portable air compressor. So hopefully It doesn't die on me for at least another few years or if It does then It's time to upgrade to the Nuvii

Thanks for the people that replied to my question.

Garmin nuvi system software missing 265W

If the unit indicates "software/firmware missing"
Take a look at this site, http://www.garmin.be/missing.htmlDownload and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and startthe updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you canuse the Webupdater to get possible newer software..
It worked for me and my Zumo550
Goodluck

O.k. This Gps Is supposed to give off street names when it talks

You do not have to reset the whole device. There is a setting you have to adjust to get the unit to speak street names. You have to go to the button on the bottom of the screen that looks like a wrench. Press this. You should see a button marked "Locale" or "Languages." Press this, then look for the spoken language button. It might say, "American English" Press this, then select a language with "(TTS)" next to it. This stands for Text to Speech and will allow the unit to speak street names.
