That depends on what you mean by "solve probability." You could study probability for a year in college and not come close to covering all the types of probability problems. Do you want the number of combinations or permutations? The upper or lower tail of some probability distribution? The inverse distribution?

I assume you are speaking of solving a system of equations with a number of unknowns. If not, please correct me. Here's an example in practice:

If you have a system of 3 equations with 3 unknowns, you would set up your matrix so that the coefficients of each variable for a particular equation are on one row. So, given equations x + y + z = 0, 2x + 3y - 4z = 1, x + -z = -1 you would type the following into your calculator: [[1,1,1,0][2,3,-4,1][1,0,-1,-1]] and press enter to make sure you typed it correctly. notice that in the third row there is a zero, since we have zero time y for the third equation. Then row-reduce the matrix (2nd > 5 > 4 > 4 or in the CATALOG as rref). You should get out the matrix [[1,0,0,-1][0,1,0,1][0,0,1,0]]. This says that x=-1 y = 1 z=0 since my first column contained the coefficients for the x variable, the second for the y variable, and the third for the z variable. The last column contains the solution, the part on the other side of the equals sign.

Put all of your equations right after the opening parenthesis separated by the word and, then a comma, then within curly braces each variable you want to solve for each separated by a comma.

There is a dedicated key for the function. The key is labeled as on the third line of the table below. You enter a positive number, press the key and then hit [=]. Hope it helps.

On the TI-36X there is no rooftop key, there is a yx key. This key is two keys below the on button. To use it, put the number in, press the yx key, put the exponent in, press the equal button.

Using elementary algebria in the binomial theorem, I expanded the power (x + y)^n into a sum involving terms in the form a x^b y^c. The coefficient of each term is a positive integer, and the sum of the exponents of x and y in each term is n. This is known as binomial coefficients and are none other than combinatorial numbers.

Combinatorial interpretation:

Using binomial coefficient (n over k) allowed me to choose k elements from an n-element set. This you will see in my calculations on my Ti 89. This also allowed me to use (x+y)^n to rewrite as a product. Then I was able to combine like terms to solve for the solution as shown below.
(x+y)^6= (x+y)(x+y)(x+y)(x+y)(x+y)(x+y) = x^6+6x^5y+15x^4y^2+20x^3y^3+15x^2y^4+6xy^5+y^6

This also follows Newton's generalized binomial theorem:

Now to solve using the Ti 89.


Using sigma notation, and factorials for the combinatorial numbers, here is the binomial theorem:

The summation sign is the general term. Each term in the sum will look like that as you will see on my calculator display. Tthe first term having k = 0; then k = 1, k = 2, and so on, up to k = n.
Notice that the sum of the exponents (n ? k) + k, always equals n.

The summation being preformed on the Ti 89. The actual summation was preformed earlier. I just wanted to show the symbolic value of (n) in both calculations. All I need to do is drop the summation sign to the actual calculation and, fill in the term value (k), for each binomial coefficient.

This is the zero th term. x^6, when k=0. Notice how easy the calculations will be. All I'm doing is adding 1 to the value of k.

This is the first term or, first coefficient 6*x^5*y, when k=1.
Solution so far = x^6+6*x^5*y

Solution so far = x^6+6*x^5*y+15*x^4*y^2

Putting the coefficients together was equal or, the same as for when I used the expand command on the Ti 89.

In the top right corner of the screen. There is a button that says 2nd.

Press 2nd then press the button that is four buttons further down on the same row of buttons.

The inverse of what&? Each inverse function uses the same key (shifted) as its direct function. For the reciprocal key look for x^-1 or [1/X]

Okay so i am using a TI-30XA What is the button on this calculator for (Prb) ??


There is no probability key on the 30Xa as there is on the 30XIIS. The shifted functions of the 8 and 9 keys will calculate the number of combinations and permutations, respectively. The shifted function of the 3 key will calculate the factorial. There is no random number generator.
