Re: How do you get the GPS to work right when you take it...
Charge it for an hour or so. Having said that, how old is it? There is normally at least some residual charge left in the unit when you first buy it.
It should turn on when charged but you need to be outside for it to receive satellite signals so it can work out where it is. This then normally stays in memory and subsequent switch ons are a lot faster.

Try to connect the Garmin using the USB cable to a PC. Does the Garmin go into communication mode? If so - load MyGarmin.com on a PC/Mac and try to update it to the latest available software version (if available). Be sure to connect it to a wall / car charger to avoid the battery running out while updating.
If communication mode doesn't start - power off. Then press the On button for at least 20 seconds for a soft restart. If no response, try a master reset reverting back to factory mode. For this power down - then press the lower right corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds while pushing the On button. Wait for a question to appear to clear all user data.
There is a hard reset button under the sticker at the bottom of the
unit. It is located directly under the check mark on the sticker. Once you get it going fully charge the unit then go to the Garmin website and register and update your 255w. I will attach the link to the Garmin Site. Thanks for using FixYa
If you are no longer getting the voice guidance from your gps, then you need to check if the volume is on the highest or lowest. There is no mute button on the gps, it is when the volume is at the lowest it seems muted. Ensure the volume is turned up by adjusting the scroll whell that is by the right hand side of the unit.
If that does not help, then you check the language settings in the unit.
Verify that the voice is enabled, by following these steps:
from the 'where to? view map' screen, touch 'tools',
Next to 'voice language' you will see 'jill' listed in the blue box on the right (if so the unit should be ready to use)
If you do not see a 'voice' listed in the blue box, touch on the blue box,
Hi, You need to reset the GPS.Press the reset button , you'll find it on the bottom right of the Nüvi but it doesn't look like a button. It's basically the sticker with all the information on it. It's just enough to push the sticker carefully with something small, not too sharp so it doesn' get destroyed. The Nüvi reboots, the loader loads and proceeds with the software load. Once this is over, shut down the Nüvi and reconnect to the PC. Then, everything works fine. However this is caused by a full memory, erase as much saved data as you can to free up space, examples are "recently found" items, saved trip or addresses which you don't need anymore.
Let us know if you were looking for something more else please accept the suggestion. Thank You for contacting Fixya.com
Press Wrench. Press the button with the picture of gears on it. Press Down arrow. Choose second menu item from the top. Press the middle of the 3 boxes on the right. Press up arrow to find American or British English.
Let us know if this solution works for you. Thanks.
1:remove sticker located at bottom 2. There should be a reset button located to the far right. 3. Hold down the reset button ( at the same time push the power button to the left) hold these for 10 seconds.
Press the reset button - you'll find it on the lower right of the Nüvi 255, but it doesn't look like a button. It's basically the sticker with all the information on it.
