It will depend on the type of keyboard that it is on.

On some laptops, the keys can be pressed back down into position and they 'click' into place again,

on others they need to be pressed down on one edge, then after that clicks down, the other side of the key should be pressed down till that clicks too.

But on others, they need the little plastic arms underneath to be carefully guided back into position, usually using a very small screwdriver as a guide.

    There are many different models/designs of laptop keyboard, so it may help to say exactly which model it is - e.g. DELL INSPIRON 2650 or maybe google the model and problem, such as;

DELL INSPIRON KEY REFITTING (just an example search of course).

It may help to find a photo of the assembly too, so it becomes clear how it is to be arranged during fitting.

Before you try refitting, make sure you have the small plastic arms too, as they are essential for all keys. If it's a longer type of key (such as a space bar or ENTER key, you may also need a metal rod that goes under it, and some have small springs in there too.

As a general rule, laptop keys have two arms under, which cross over each other to create a scissor action as you press the key normally, and a rubber part underneath then pushes the key back up again.

I have a dell inspiron mini 1012 netbook... The other day when I went to type the keyboard typed itself. Now it stopped typing itself but another problem occurred. When I press 1 letter, 2 letters pop

You can try removing the keyboard and reinserting. You should find instructions online, probably a video, on how to remove the keyboard. However, my bet is that it probably has to be replaced.

I have a compaq presario f 500 and somehow the keys are locked, how can I unlock them? the letters and the numbers won't work, but the track pad does.please help!!!!!!!!!

Maybe your keyboard is bad or the cable is come aloose. You will have to remove the keyboard to check the cable. On the F500 I think you will have to remove the battery, then remove all the screws inside the battery case. Notice that some of the screws inside the battery case has a picture of a keyboard (these screws hold the keyboard in place). There are also some screw on the bottom of the case other than inside the battery case that has the keyboard sysmbol on it ( I think 2 or 3). Once your remove the screws use a flat head screwdriver to pry the strip that has the power button on it above the keyboard aloose. Be careful because there is a cable on that strip that is either for the power button or some other device. Also remember, the keyboard has a cable under it. This is the cable that you will need to remove and slide it back into the slow snuggly. i think the slot it goes in lifts up so that you can place the cable in then push the slot down to secure the cable.

Hi, I have a Lenovo s10-2 and when i researched it before I bought it it said it had an led light for the keyboard, which I really liked with my old thinkpad. For the life of me I can't find it. Any...

Hi kenax951,

Thank you for choosing Fixya, I see that you are asking where the option for the keyboard light will be on your S10-2 Lenovo Netbook.

I am sorry to say that the S10-2 Netbook does not have that function or light under the keyboard to illuminate the keys.

All Lenovo systems do not have that kind of keyboard, only IBM would have some Laptops that have a light that can illuminate the keyboard.

I have checked every detailed manual and refference regarding the Lenovo S10-2 Netbook but there isn't anything that would specify about a light LED on the keys of the s10-2 keyboard.

Thank you for choosing Fixya,

Hi, I have somehow switched the blue numbers on the keyboard, the one at the letters: J; K;L;M;U;I;O and so on. And now instead of them when i type the numbers 1,2,3,4.... will come up instead of...

You have turned on the Number Lock. This enables the number keypad that is embedded in the main keyboard. There is set of three lights to the right of the power button; the middle one indicates when the Num Lock is on or off on the keyboard. To toggle this on or off press and together. The key is between the and the at the lower left of the keyboard.

The user's manual is here: .

I hope this helps.

Mac laptop keys are not showing letters but symbols and delete key not working. How do I unlock this problem?

There could be a couple of possibilities :-

1. Faulty keypad
2. IC on the main board

Faulty keyboard is more often a problem. Even though there is no dust and dirt, faulty keyboard may result in all the above said symptoms. If you press a letter key, a symbol might be there. If you press delete key, it might not work. The best option what i follow in my shop is replacement of keyboard. There are certain days when i only replace few keys, but more often if this is a problem with more than 5 keys or with all the keys on the notebook, better to go for a new keyboard. For your laptop, always prefer hard keys as those are more durable than the soft keys.

IC on the notebook is again one of the reasons. This is usually a problem with old laptops, such as 5 to 7 years old. New laptops generally do not have this problem. If laptop IC is at fault, soldering is required to get it fixed. It needs a tech to confirm the faulty IC on the mainboard and then followed by replacement.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

My keyboard

If you've spilt tea down your laptop you could have shorted something out.

You could try a new keyboard, or take out your old one and see if you can clean it up a bit, and try and clean the tea from inside.
