The power went out the other day and now I have the same problem. All three headsets say searching. The answering machine still works but nothing happens when I try to dial on the phones. I have tried unplugging the power cord as well as the phone cord to reset everything.

SOURCE: VTech 5.8 mhz won't work

I found a solution that fixed this problem (at least for me). On the vtech site they said to unplug the base unit for at least 5 minutes. Previously, I had only unplugged the base unit for a few seconds. This time, I left it unplugged for about 10 minutes or so and when I plugged it back in, everything was working fine. Apparently there is some sort of capacitor that must discharge long enough to completely remove power from the circuitry.

Good luck and I hope this works for you!

SOURCE: phone not connecting

I find that unplugging the base unit power for about 20 seconds, then replugging it, usually clears this problem.

SOURCE: My Phone will not connect to the base unit...

My handset displays CONNECTING...
Move the handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range.

This is what was listed in the Vtech Manual.

What I suggest is not just powering it off, but remove battery and wait a couple of minutes. Put battery back in and try it. The other thing I suggest is a new battery or switching it temporarily with a phone that works, to see if that helps before you buy a new one. If the battery is weak it will have trouble reaching the base.

SOURCE: i want to add an additional handset to my vtech phone...the new handset is "searching for base" and requests a 15-digit number which is suppose to be on the base--there is no 15-digit number to input.

The 15 digit number shoudl be on a sticker on the bottom of the base unit.

Bought a used vtech 5.8 phone, charged the battery and now see message "not registered. I can not make calls... how do I register it?

I believe it is telling you it is not registered with the Base Unit. You did get the Base Unit with it didn't you, otherwise you have a paperweight.

If you do have a set then this is the answer

Tip 1 of 1
Step 1: Place the handset in the base or charger. If PRESS FIND HS 4 SEC ON BASE does not appear on the screen after a few seconds, lift up handset and recradle it in the base or charger.

Step 2: On the telephone base, press and hold FIND HANDSET for approximately four seconds. Release FIND HANDSET once the IN USE light comes on.

After a while, the handset will emit a series of tones, and the newly registered handset will be assigned the lowest extension number not previously assigned to another system handset when successfully registered. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if the handset does not successfully register to the telephone base within two minutes.

I need a power adapter for telephone base for model 30524

Not a problem. Take the base unit with you to Radio Shack and they will get you a proper replacement. (The numbers on the plug in to the unit will say how many volts Direct Current are required to operate is properly and the tag underneath will also state how many milliWatts of power are required at that voltage.) The key is buying the proper plug in end that fits the socket. Radio Shack has units with several socket tips so you may select the proper one. Make sure the polarity of the socket plug you use matches the wire polarity... the stripe on one side of the power cord is the + side on the socket tip.

Red light indicating fone charging has not shut off for around 20 hours.

My Vtech 6.0 charging light only turns off when I remove a handset from the charger base. I have had these three set for two years and they work fine. I think that the red light is just to let you know that the charger is working, if you loose power, or unplug one of the base units there is no indication of a dead battery.

We had a power outage and now the answering machine displays an A that we can't get rid of. Now matter what we do the system no longer works.

Try unplugging the base unit and removing the batteries from all the handsets. Then put the batteries back in and plug in the base unit to see if that resets everything.

Searching for base

My long-term experience with these phones is that occasionally, they get themselves into some kind of weird state: this is usually indicated by the flashing "searching" message.

In all cases it's been cured by unplugging the power supply AND the phone-line (both simultaneously) from the base, waiting a few seconds, then re-connecting. Normally this sorts things out, but will require you to re-set time& date (the base can sometimes still derive power from the incoming 50v line). Batteries out of handsets is a last (addtional) resort. I've very rarely had to re-register.
