Want to print with black ink only using Brother MFC-420CN
I want to print some camera pictures in B&W using black ink, not the color mix, with my Brother MFC-420CN; can I program for this, and if so, how? The downloaded Brother manual doesn't detail this. My camera uses SD memory and my system uses Windows XP; I can download the camera to computer file if needed for this, or let the printer read the card.
Re: Want to print with black ink only using Brother...
I see it's been a while since you posted your question but in case anyone else is wondering about this, I'll answer. The information is not in the User's Guide booklet but in the Software User's Guide which should be available on your software disk, or you can view it here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/Public/files/dlf/doc000240/BH3_UsaEngSoft_C.pdf
Basically, you go to the advanced tab under the printing preferences and select grayscale.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. goodluck!

Yikes! No. That's how they designed it. You always to have all 4 ink because the printer does self-cleaning every so often. Otherwise, the jets dry & clog.
Also, my understanding is that even for black prints, color inks are used in small qty. If ink cost is an issue (it is for a lot of people), you might consider bulk systems.
You said you replaced the cartridges. Were they Genuine Brothers' Cartridges?
My Brother MFC-240C, does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. That sounds like your problem. Also I had with Brother's was problem with Color. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, or Blue Green, etc.The Generic Cartridges, also printed lines thru the words. That's what the Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, but you have to fill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY, or Take them to have them filled.
So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for the PRINTERS.
This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.
I have a brother MFC 3240C. My Black ink stopped printing(initially printed horizontal faded lines and gradually got worse), the other colors were printing fine. I tried cleaning numerous time( 50 -100 times over 1-2 weeks ). Still no improvement. The way I print now is:
1. I go to Printer Properties
2. Change Media type from "Plain Paper" to "Inkjet Paper".
3. Change Quality to "Photo".
This takes a long time to print 1-2 minutes per page. However, this works for me since this is my Home printer and use it for printing only few pages here are there.
Try printing the test print and see if all the colors are working, if some are missing you need to clean the printhead, and if you are using generic inks, sometimes the colors aren't as good as Brother inks.
actually, its not. the reason is, there is a small resovoire (sp?) in the ink cartridges. if you continue to print, the nozzles will clog up, and can cause all the nozzles not to work. even when you do just black, the printer has to clean at times all the nozzles and if your nozzles are empty, air will go into the deep and dry up the excess ink.
if you are going to do primarily black prints, you should get a black and white laser for those uses only.
Cleaning the print head To ensure good print quality, the MFC will regularly clean the print head. You can start the cleaning process manually if needed. Clean the print head and ink cartridges if you get a horizontal line in the text or graphics on your printed pages. You can clean Black only or three colors at a time (Cyan/Yellow/Magenta), or all four colors at once. Cleaning the print head consumes ink. Cleaning too often uses ink unnecessarily. Caution Do NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print head’s warranty. 1 Press Ink. 2 Press ▲ or ▼ to select Cleaning. Press Menu/Set. 3 Press ▲ or ▼ to select Black, Color or All. Press Menu/Set. The MFC will clean the print head. When cleaning is finished, the MFC will go back to standby mode automatically. If you clean the print head at least five times and the print has not improved, call Brother Customer Service
My yellow cartridge was doing the same thing as your black. So I took the cartridge out, and took a flashlight to see how it works. There is like a little straw on the right hand side which goes up into the printer cartridge, this I assume is to measure the ink. I took a needle and cleaned that 'straw' thoroughly. Reseated the ink, ran cleaning and test print, and then the printer found the yellow ink! You could give that a try. It might work for you too. (I have never used any ink but Brother ink in the printer, btw.)
unplug maqchine from power. take all carts out. wait 5 minutes. connect machine to power. insert carts as demanded. give the right answer if machine asks if the carts are changed. machine will do some cleaning.
do you use generic ink? in that case you might have clogged the printhead with wrong ink. The ph cant be cleaned anymore.
nevertheless try this (carts should be nearly full!): press menue then start mono (blue copy) then fourtimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4. Machine will display init_all. press start mono. machine will refill tubes and ph with fresh ink and do some cleaning. after that press 7 then 6 then 3 and start mono. machine will do a powerpurge. press zero then 9 to do a quality test print. If it cant do the job leave maintenance by pressing 9 then 9. do the test print manually by pressing ink etc.
If you still do not see any colors the ph is clogged and cant be fixed anymore. It has to be replaced.
