He gives a good way to troubleshoot many of the Powermates. He's slightly wrong on 2 points:
1) Not all powermates have brushes, the smaller ones are brushless.
2) You don't really need 12 volts to flash, I prefer the 9v dry cell because it can't provide so much power that it fries your rotor (a car battery could).

Note that his method is much safer than what I described and you ought to do it that way if you can.

Can't on and off tv

Hello Carl, check first for:
  1. AC mains voltage.
  2. Open Main line.
  3. Open TV cord.
Then we go to the TV itself,
  1. check for power switch does they feel spongy, sluggish or not operating properly.
  2. If you use a remote, check for batteries.
This is now TV power supply problem. need to open the back panel. Caution this should be done by a tech person.
  1. check the ac line from mains to power supply board.
  2. check for open fuse.
  3. check for output voltage on the main board.
If you see bulging capacitors, check for power regulator. This part of the service requires a technical person. as this point the logical next thing to do if the trouble was not found, replace the entire power board. Replacing the power board is costly. Hope you decide what is reasonable. Replace board plus labor and effort, and a possibility that the TV may not work due to poor analysis. OR call your dealer for service.

I have a Coleman Powermate 6250. Runs Great, No power to outlets!

Excite the genset.

with the gen engine running,
1) plug a 3/8 drill into an outlet,
(make sure the drill is set to the forward rotation)
2) hold the trigger in the run position
3) by hand, rotate the drill chuck with a quick flip of your wrist.
*** NOTE: BE PREPARED !!! this will excite the gen-set and the drill will start to run as normal.

Starts fine but no AC

Hi Steve,
Sorry to take so long to respond, I didn't get the email telling me to look here.
Because you're in a dire situation I'll give the quick and dirty but very dangerous way to flash any generator. You're gonna want a friend to at least watch and shut the generator off if you get into trouble.

Make a pigtail from an unused 110v electrical cord, pretty much any cord will do but you want one that is easy to hang on to. You want about 1/2 inch or maybe less of bare wire at the ends of the white and black leads of the cord. Plug this into any of the power outlets on the generator.

Start the generator and let it come up to speed.

Using a 9v dry cell or a 6v lantern battery, tap the bare wires of the pigtail onto the battery terminals. Polarity won't matter. You want ot be very careful doing this because if it works you'll suddenly be hanging on to a 110vac live wire. You only need a very short burst of electricity into the power windings to get the rotors magnetic field going.

Once you've done the slap above remove the pigtail and plug in a light or some other small load for 5 minutes or so. We just want to make the rotor coil work for a bit to "recharge" the residual magnetism in the rotor.

Please be very, very careful - in the shop we only do this if there is no other way to get it done, and we work as a team with the spotter having his/her hand on the engine kill switch.

Regards,
Carl

How many gal tank is the Powermate 6250 10 KW

Nearly all of the Powermates have the same 5 gallon fuel tank.
I'm a little confused, the Powermate 6250s are all 5Kw generators with 6250 watt surge ratings. Is yours really a 10Kw or did I misunderstand which generator you have?
