Why doesnt audio go to the receiver

There may be a cable that isn't passing audio any more or the amp in the tape deck isn't working.

Sony SPZ70 Cassette deck

If the reels are going to quick it is either in fast wind or the pinch roller and head base are not moving up. Try again and if still no result tthen a Technician needs to see it.

My technics hd51 tape deck gives garbled sound when playing in one direction but the other direction is fine/

The different direction may have different drive components and torques. The first thing to do is make sure the Pinch Rollers and capstan shafts are clean as a lot of the problem are had due to lack of clean drive parts. Dirty drive parts can cause the skew of tape off the correct path and this results in lack of good tape to head contact that is essential for the high frequency to be heard.
If the unit is older the tak-up torque may be too much and this is measured with a special torque tape sold by Teac or Sony. This can also result in tape skew issues- this would need to be resolved by a Technician as you have to take the slip clutch part out of the deck to rebuild it.

What is the bias control's function?

The Bias control is used during recording. If you turn down the bias, you will get more highs, but the distortion will increase, and then start to increase dramatically if you back off the bias more.

As far as playing tapes from different decks goes.......

1..Does the tape that you recorded on your deck sound OK on your deck ?
2..Does the tape that you recorded on your deck sound OK on other decks ?

If 1 and 2 are true, then your deck is OK.

If the tapes recorded on a specific deck sound bar on yours, but 1 and 2 are true, then the other deck is faulty.

When a deck leaves the factory, the head is aligned to a " standard " tape. By standard tape I mean a very special tape recorded in such a way, that a tech can tell if the head is out of align and "tweek " the physical alignment of the tape head..

All decks are aligned just a little differently, but fairly close to each other.

first do the mechanicals....is the head of your deck spotlessly clean ?. Use 99% pure isopropanol alcohol and a cotton swab. Never use anything metal to clean the tape head. If you scratch the head, its toast.

If your deck is clean, plays its own recordings well, and those recordings play well on other decks, then your deck is not the problem.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Wr565 - both decks jam the tape when i play them. any suggestions?

rss13506,
I'm not sure what you mean by jam but I bet you need to clean the head, roller and pin in each deck. Use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to clean the:

1) Head (silver thing in the center bottom where the tape slides over; it produces the sound).

2) Roller (black wheel thing that keeps tension on the tape).

3) Pin (above the roller-works with the roller).

If any of these parts are dirty the deck will eat up the tapes. Clean them even if you do not see visible dirt on the q-tip as dust does not show as well as oils in the air typically from cooking will gum up the parts. Give them ample time to dry before trying a tape.

As any tape playing person knows from the 70's and 80's-try a tape you don't care about first, to make sure the deck will not eat up the ones you like!

No sound coming from tape dec, though tape is turning

First check the wires going to the tape heads make certain they are connecting. If good follow them and see if they go to any micro switches, if still no joy keep following the leads to the PC board. The best way to test is to poke around and see if you get any buzz on any of the pre-amp parts. Work back from the output sockets of the deck to where the head wires join. If you get a buzz after and not before you have located the faulty stage.
Don't touch the power supply parts!

Sony TC-WE475 problem when taping A to B, B is not recording. Heads turn but no sound.

Hey there,
Next time you have a few minutes, open the B side of the tape deck and look at the actual tape head- if it is dirty, you can clean it using cotton swabs and 80% isopropyl alcohol. (Higher than 80% is actually better, because it has less water in it)
Let me know if this helps your problem,
HortonA!

SANSUI SC-2100 RECORDING PROBLEM

First try cleaning the heads with some electronics grade alcohol and a static free cleaning swab...although it sounds like the head may need alignment...if those two things do not work out for you, the capstan motor might be the culprit.
