Question about NetGear RangeMax WPN824 Wireless Router (WPN824NAR)

Internet keeps dropping out using this router

My question is why does this keep happening? Before purchasing this router I had an older Linksys router that would not let us browse the internet using wireless at all. It was replaced with the new Netgear router which installed and set up everything with ease. It worked for about an hour, then dropped out. About 20 min. later, it worked fine again. Then 30 min. or so later, dropped out again and the circle begins. Our ISP is going to charge us $65 for the service call if its not an issue on their end...so Im just trying to cover anything I can beforehand. There are 2 computers hooked up to the wireless. Both experience this problem and are running Windows XP with Firefox for the browser. When directly connected to the modem service is fine, though I dont know if it would drop out after extended periods of time. The network connections link shows service is connected and is sending data out...but freezes when trying to recieve. This is all so frustrating.

Thanks for any help.

I wish that was an option. I just moved here not to long ago and dont have any friends in the area at this time. Thanks for the idea though, if I find someone willing to try that Ill definitely give it a shot!

My connection says 4 out of 5 bars when I connect, but then 10 seconds later the internet will drop, then reconnect, then drop, then reconnect again. I can't stay connected for longer than one minute.

One simple solution, can you try using the router on another ISP connection (at your friends' place possibly?) This will rule out the possiblility of your ISP fault saving you $65 straightaway...

Hi,

we need to first figure out whether it the modem or the router which is dropping the connection.

Please connect one of your computer directly to the modem, by pass the router and access the internet. If the connection drops then its the modem which is dropping the connection and you need to contact your isp to check it.

If the internet works fine directly with the modem then its your router which is dropping the connection. To fix the router we can upgrade it firmware.

To upgrade the firmware please visit the link below;
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys/E1000

Note; If you are not comfortable upgrade the firmware then don’t do it. If not done properly then it can damage your router.

After 30 min connected to the internet I am dropped from the internet. It says I am still connected to the Linksys router. It sems that It is timing out. What to do? Do I need to download new firmware?

Check the "keep alive" settings in your router, there is usually a choice between having it constantly "pinging" to keep the connection open, or letting it disconnect when it has been idle for awhile. Make sure it is set to "keep alive". The wording may be different but it will be something along these lines. Go in your browser to the wireless router's configuration page (i.e. http://192.168.1.1 ). Depending on what brand router you have this ip address will vary, consult your documentation for which number is used.

First of all, are you connecting with a PC or a Notebook?

If you have the Linksys router, you should replace the MS utility with the Linksys utility it figures your linksys wireless lan card
There are programs you can use to keep track of your router and connections...One such program is called Port Mapper...

Does your problem happen everday...or every 3 weeks...are you doing anything in particular when you are getting the inability to use the connection?
There is a new Vista patch out there I recommend downloading.
