Question about Operating Systems

Computer will no longer read. play or even acknowledge dvds or cd

As of late, my iMac OSX 10.4.11 (only a year old) will no longer play or even acknowledge dvds and/or cds. Someone suggested that I download a vlc player and try that. Did that - still nothing.

I even trashed my dvd player and installed anew. Still, dvd upon insertion into drive doesn't even show up on desktop, finderor anywhere else. It simple ejects itself after about a minute. I did ahardware test on my computer and all seems fine. What do you supposecould be the problem and what might I try next?

Thank you forgiving this truly frustrating problem your time and consideration. Ihope to hear from you soon. Meanwhile, Godspeed, you & yours &HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Thank you so very much - actually, I think your suggestion was right on, but honestly, the problem I'm having is not with CDs but rather with DVDs and I've done all you've suggested except the 'last resort' step (trashing ~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb)because I don't seem to have that file in my home library for whatever reason. As of now, my problem is ongoing and still my DVDs are not acknowledged/read/played after insertion into drive, but are just ejected. Also, (and I'm not certain if this was the case since this DVD problem started) but when I do put a CD into the drive, it says its blank - even though the CD is not, in fact, a blank Cd at all. I thank you profusely for all you've done to help and oh, yeah, I've also noticed that sometimes, just sometimes, I can't even insert a dvd or cd into the drive - its as if its blocked or something, but then later on, hours or so later, I can slip the disk smoothly in - if that helps at all in identifying what the problem might be.
Again, thank you so much and HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

    Godspeed,

    Steff

Try this:

How to fix the CD player

1. Go to System/Library/Caches and trash the folder com.apple.kernelcaches
2. Go back to System/Library and trash the file Extensions.kextcache
3. Restart.
If that doesn't work, try trashing this file:
~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb
That is the way its done

Mac pro wont start nothing happens power light stays on

this can happen if your hard drive is gone. Start will reinstallation of mac os from your CD etc. first. if that solves the problem Good!, otherwise change hard drive and reinstall mac os. Third reason why your Mac pro will do this is because of messed up mother board which can only be fixed by your local computer store etc.

I can copy a cd to my computer but if i try to burn a cd it rejects it?

OK, so it depends on the software you use to get the songs onto your computer. Are you making the copies into mp3 format, or are they converting into something like WMA format? Burning software can handle mp3 just fine, and can even convert it to cd audio tracks, just like the original...(Shhhhhh! ;) )
Might I suggest a little freeware program called Freerip? It copies your music files to mp3, with output settings, and then you can use Nero Express to burn if you want ;)

I am running OS X 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade my operating system?

Please provide more information.
To what would you like to upgrade it?

Since OSX Mavericks was just announced, I'm going to assume that's what you're wanting to upgrade to.

Not all Macs can run Mavericks.

Mavericks Capable Macs

Mavericks, like its predecessor Mountain Lion, requires one of the following Macs with at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of available hard drive space:
  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

If your Mac isn't one of the ones listed above, you won't be able to upgrade.

If you have an iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini model that was originally released in Early/Mid 2006, the latest version of Mac OS X your system supports is Snow Leopard.

What are the requirements to download Apple Mountain Lion OSX?

You must have the following computer to download Mountain Lion:

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)

Once that is done, you must be updated to the most recent version of either Snow Leopard or Lion. If you don't have either of these operating systems (which is highly unlikely considering the other computers should have them, but I digress) then you will need to get them before Mountain Lion.

After that, go to the Apple Store and download Mountain Lion!

Sounds like drive drive has took a dump on yah. I would just install a new dvd drive. They are inexpensive and easy to replace. I replaced a drive that was doing the same thing you discribed and it solved my issue.
