When a black box appears on the screen it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. When the closed captions are set to CC1, it puts the words on the screen and when set to TEXT it puts a black box in the center of the screen. Go into the set's menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.

Check you remote control for a "CC" button, if you find it press it again to disable the close caption OFF. It might have been set by mistake without you knowing it.

Typically, the closed captioning area is the lower portion of the screen though. Are you sure that this feature is turned off? Verify that closed captioning is turned off. The only other possibility is that the internally generated menu is somehow being passed along during some channel displays and is effecting the picture.
Let me know if the closed captioning changes anything.

It is a closed captioning box generated by the TV ( not the DirecTV
box). It happens when CC is on but set to one of the "unused" CC modes.
Just make sure CC is off on the TV and it will go away.

Try removing batteries from the remote, if problem disappears , then that is a faulty remote, get a replacement one.

If the rectangle still come and goes with the remote off check that there is no other remote or IR device that can be interfeering, if there is none, is a fault that is starting the closed caption circuit.

A black rectangle showing in the middle of the screen this appeared suddenly

this sounds like screen burn with rear projection and plasma when a picture is left sitting still on the screen sometimes it will burn in to the screen rendering it useless i left my ps3 paused on my old tv then when i changed to bbc one it still had a faint call of duty pause screen in the back it can vary from things like that to logos to your black rectangle the only way of repair is by replacing the screen all toghether i would advise you to just take the screen off and start using the tv as a projector if you cant find a screen it is only a bit of ribbed plastic but very hard part to find

On my TV certain shows (Craig Furgerson, Oprah, The View)on different networks,a black rectangle, about 1/3 of the picture, appears. I cannot remove it.

That box appears to be from the close caption feautre. If you have the original remote you can disable using the menu and go to audio functions and look for close caption to turn it OFF.
Do you have the user's guide for this TV?
If you do not, could you provide the model number of your TV?

The "Caption" mode may be on and set to "Text". To fix press MENU button on the remote then use down arrow to select "Setup" and press ENTER. Select "Caption" and press ENTER. Select "Off" and press ENTER. Press MENU again to exit setup.

The image leaves and the screen goes black.

Either the picture tubes are going, or they are dusty. Take apart the front grill and take off the black cut away behind the grill. Inspect the tubes and the circuit boards. If they are dusty blow them off with an air can duster. It might work and its free and takes 5 minutes.

2001-53"projection-suddenly has a black rectangle on lower 3rd of screen-just appeared and can't seem to get rid of it-have unplugged-and used remote-but nothing

That's the closed-captioning box. There should be a button on the remote to remove it. It's probably labelled "CC" or some variant thereof.

Black insert/rectangle

T he text mode in the closed caption is turned on.
Turn off the closed caption.
I don't have the schematic in front of me, so, I will try from memory.
There may be a button on the remote that says CC, if so then use that button to turn it off, if not then go to the customer menu and you may have to search a bit.
Either way it's an easy fix and you can do it yourself.
I f you can't find it, then, reply and I will give better instructions when I get into my shop next week.
