Question about Air Conditioners

1 Answer

I had a Panasonic bath fan installed the week before Thanksgiving. It was represented that this fan was virtually silent. It is however, noisier than the 22-year old fan it replaced. My contractor tells me that the problem is that the vent exiting the fan is vented by a 3" (too small) flexible hose that travels into the ceiling and ties into a larger duct that isn't reachable. Panasonic fans are at their best when they have a 4" vent hose that travels with a minimum of bends for a total length of 20 feet. Any conditions other than that and they get noisier. It was louder than normal when we installed it. We could only reduce the noise by changing the size of the existing hose to 4” and running that all the way to the central air duct for all the units wherever that is. Maybe Mario (building superintendent) knows. This would entail taking down the ceiling. Is there any other solution? Is there another panasonic fan that fits the smaller size vent? This was very expensive with the installation, and I cannot stand the noise.

Babala says this is a vibration noise. Electrician is suggesting motor replacement with a motor that has a lower sone rating.

What kind of noise is it? Wind noise only?

Or is it more of a vibration and motor type noise?

Vibration noise is usually due to inballanced, or damaged fan blade.

Take off the coveer, make sure its installed properly, the blade is not cracked, and check for ballanced motor/bracket/blade.

They typically have rubber bushings between the motor mounts and the housing to dampen vibration noise.

Why is fan noisier?

If it's the indoor fan you are referring to and its an ecm motor ,make sure all your diffusers are open. Newer motors change speeds in order to control static pressure. If filter is dirty or registers get closed the motor will run harder.

I have a customer who would like a Bosch AE-9.5 tankless water heater installed in the master bathroom. The master bath is located at the far end of the house & they are wasting a great deal of water...

In theory it sounds good, but I don't think it would function properly. Most folks install a low boy 20 or 25 gallon water heater near the master bath and use the home's cold water feed as the supply line. That way, the water for the master bath alone, will always remain hot.Of course this would involve some plumbing modifications.

Of course, the other less expensive solution, would be to insulate the hot water pipe(s) feeding the master bath, from the existing water heater. That way, there would be no heat loss in the pipe(s) so the water in the pipe would remain warm to hot all the time.

Either of the above solutions should heat things up for your customer.

I would suggest that you turn temperature setting up to 140 degrees and see if this won't help you. Obviously with water temperature that high make sure no little ones are left unattendded. Thank you

My three year old Frigedaire window air conditioner is noisier and not cooling like it did before.

A noisy Air Conditioner is caused by a few things.

1. The most common failure is the blower fan hub has cracked and the blower wheel is dragging on the internal chassis area. You will have a very low air flow and lots of noise.

2. The evaporator coils are clogged with dirt. An air-conditioner that is used around the clock should be thoroughly cleaned every 90 days.

3. The condenser coils are clogged in the back of the unit on the inside.

4. Dirt has caked up on the fan blades and the motor is now driving both the blower fan and the condenser fan in an out of balance condition due to the dirt build up.

These are all things that cause a noisy air-conditioner.

Fan not running on Heat Pum

That does not sound normal at all, I have a Goodman Heatpump and the Fan on the Evaporator (outside unit) should run as soon as it starts up!
The only delay you should be seeing is when the unit starts, the fan in the AHU starts 5 seconds after and runs for about 1.5 minutes after shutdown.

the mfd is stamped on the side of the capacitor.Be careful to kill the power and to NOT touch the terminals. The capacitor is capable of holding a charge even after power is disconnected.

Replacement

Remove the front panel, & look for the drain tube that runs from the drip pan under the cold coil. It is likely blocked & may be cleared with a piece of coathanger wire. Be gentle.
