Re: kenmore washer 70 series 20702 will not spin or drain
It sounds like your coupler is broken, with the machine unplugged and with help pull the washer out and then tilt it back. look between the motor and the transmition for a back disk sandwiched between 2 white disks. if it is gone then you need to replace the coupler. it is a medium difficulty job, you need to take the shell off in order to do the job.

Check door switch: If
the lid switch is bad it will not drain or spin. Try this test: With lid open
let it finish wash cycle. Press lid switch down with screwdriver. Washer should begin draining.
Release switch. Motor should stop. Press
switch a second time. Washer should
start spinning as it continues to drain. If motor doesn't come on while lid
switch is pressed, replace the switch.

That is going to be your lid switch. On this washer the pump is mounted on the motor. The motor goes in one direction for wash and the other for spin. The water gets expelled from the washer in the spin mode.
Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today.Sounds like a failed motor coupler part number 285753. It connects the motor to the trans. You can lean the unit back to change this part. Remove the pump remove the motor and you will see it.

You need to replace the lid switch. This is located under the case. you have to take the case off to change this part. This is done by taking the 2 screws out of the front of the control panel. Then flip the panel back and remove the 2 brass clips that hold on the case. Then you can remove the whole washer case to get acces to the lid switch. This is a very common problem and an easy problem to fix.
Timer is defective. Your unit has a netural drain. When finished agitating, the shuts down and then starts up reversing to drain and spin. On the initial reverse start, the water drains without the transmission spinning. After a timed period 3-4 minutes, the timer is supposed to pause, stopping the motor for a few seconds. When the motor stops again, the transmission shift to the spin cycle and when the timer resumes power tothe motor it should spin. You are doing the same thing when you lift the lid...stopping the timer and then the tranny shifts and when you set the lid down, the washer spins. Replace the timer.......

it will fill with water but will not wash. if you put it on spin the water will drain but it will not spin. it sounds like the motor turning. is it a clutch that has broken.
