Thanks, actually, it will drain so the coupler is most likely the problem. Ready to try a fix but can't figure out how to remove the shell. Help! Pictures would be nice.

  • deeray41 Dec 21, 2008

Thanks kelly, I removed the shell, found the coupler, it was still intact although loose when fitted with the white plastic discs. I refitted the white discs around the black coupler and put the machine back together. Same problem, no spin, It wasn't necessary to tap the coupler back on, it just fit into the shaft. Should I try a new coupler and go from there? If it is not the coupler, then what? The coupler was old but not desintegrated, it had some wear but looked ok.

I'll check for the clicks. Since the coupler is inexpensive, I'm going to replace it and see what happens, If no success, I will relunctantly call an expert.

Thanks, finally located a coupler (metal shaft, not plastic), replaced the broken coupler and the machine is fixed.

It sounds like your coupler is broken, with the machine unplugged and with help pull the washer out and then tilt it back. look between the motor and the transmition for a back disk sandwiched between 2 white disks. if it is gone then you need to replace the coupler. it is a medium difficulty job, you need to take the shell off in order to do the job.

well i cant do pictures but i can talk you through it. ok 1st, look for two screws on the consul were the timer and knobs are. they should be in the corners near were the consul and the top of the machine meet. or if they are not their then they are behind the panel on the back of the consul. once you have those screws out then you can flip open the consul (unplug first). once you have the consul up there are two brass looking clips on either side, take a long screw driver and slide it straight down into the little up curved portion of the clip and then push forward on the screw driver popping the clips out. once those clips are out you can lift the shell away free. once the shell is off take your screw driver and slide off the clips holding the pump on and then the clips holding the motor on. P.S. unclip the top clip from the motor first and when you put it back put the top clip on last. you should see the coupler right their, make sure you have the new one first. just pry the old one off and tap the new one on with a hammer and dowel or something comparable. now reverse these steps and you should be done. kelly

when you took the coupler off are you sure there wasn't a crack in it? in the plastic white disks, were the pegs still on the white disks? if the lid switch is fine and you hear click click when you open and shut the lid and the coupler is fine and you hear the motor running the machine should work. if not then you need to call and expert. kelly

Kenmore Washer 70 series Model #110.22722100 won't spin

Check door switch: If the lid switch is bad it will not drain or spin. Try this test: With lid open let it finish wash cycle. Press lid switch down with screwdriver. Washer should begin draining. Release switch. Motor should stop. Press switch a second time. Washer should start spinning as it continues to drain. If motor doesn't come on while lid switch is pressed, replace the switch. OR

Kenmore washer model # 110 20702 990 will not run past washer cycle or drain water

That is going to be your lid switch.
On this washer the pump is mounted on the motor. The motor goes in one direction for wash and the other for spin. The water gets expelled from the washer in the spin mode.
Here is 4 videos a service manual and a brief description of how it all goes down:

My Kenmore 70 series is 18 years old. It will not

Hello. Since your machine is 18 years old and the agitation/spin is costly to repair I would definitely recommend a replacement washer.

Why My Kenmore 70 Series Washer Won't Drain Or Spin?

You need to replace the lid switch. This is located under the case. you have to take the case off to change this part. This is done by taking the 2 screws out of the front of the control panel. Then flip the panel back and remove the 2 brass clips that hold on the case. Then you can remove the whole washer case to get acces to the lid switch. This is a very common problem and an easy problem to fix.

Washer agitates, drains OK, but spin doesn't start

Timer is defective. Your unit has a netural drain. When finished agitating, the shuts down and then starts up reversing to drain and spin. On the initial reverse start, the water drains without the transmission spinning. After a timed period 3-4 minutes, the timer is supposed to pause, stopping the motor for a few seconds. When the motor stops again, the transmission shift to the spin cycle and when the timer resumes power tothe motor it should spin. You are doing the same thing when you lift the lid...stopping the timer and then the tranny shifts and when you set the lid down, the washer spins. Replace the timer.......
