Question about Dishwashers

Open Question

Kenmore dishwasher starting and stopping

I have a Kenmore DW model #5871551590. I hadn't used it for awhile, I cleaned the inside out, ran it through one cycle with some vinegar for the hard water deposits, ran it through another cycle with bleach for the scum and odor. Next time I tried to turn it on, it filled with water, the motor came on (actually the humming noise sounded like it was coming from the door), hummed for 5 or 6 seconds, then shut off. Now that's all it'll do. It won't drain the water that's in it, and the motor won't start. The door makes a buzzing sound for a couple seconds then quits. Is there a problem with the connection in the door? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Something buzzes inside, sounds like a small compressor

sounds like your pump is stopped up or clogged and not able to turn. The pump is on the bottom side and usually the dw will have to be taken out to remove it and replace or clean it.

My 6 year old Kenmore Elite DW has started leaking and has a musty smell. The dishes are clean but food residue is left on the inside door and black gunk builds up on the bottom of the dishwasher.

Use a wet/dry shop vac to clean out the strainer and drain from the inside of your machine. A musty smell is a sure sign that food particles have clogged your drain BUT can also mean that your wash/spray heads have become clogged as well. Use a pipe cleaner on the spray heads and run water over the jets to make particles flow to the big hole in the center of your wash heads, then reassemble. Don't forget to put those little plastic looking rings back exactly the way you found them or your wash heads wont turn properly. They are usually made of teflon to lubricate the spray heads.

Measure the electric resistance of the Drain Motor. (Value should be 20-40 Ohms) If it is out of spec, replace it.
Please reply with what worked best. Thanks!

Go to Sears.com if you have a Kennmore. Under "parts," you can input your model number, which is found on the inside of the washer on the side, and then search for the part. It even has a diagram you can pull up. Unfortunately, this part for mine, and probably yours will only be available by purchasing the entire hose outfit, (about $65).

Kenmore Dishwasher #587.... doing nothing but heat dry

The problem appears to stem from the float and float switch. The float is a mushroom shaped plastic part that resides on the bottom left, just inside the door. It appears that the float does not release the float switch, causing the dishwasher to think it is full of water, and won't allow the dishwasher to fill. It's a relatively straight forward repair, but even with a new part, the same scenario is likely to repeat itself until the float or float switch is modified by Kenmore.
