The changing of batteries and resyncing did not work for me. I had this problem on more than one PC. For some reason, the USB ports are not working even though your PC thinks it is.
Go to control panel, click on system, select the Hardware tab and then click on Device manager. In the list you will see Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Click on the + sign to open this list. You need to right click on each listing and uninstall each. After you do this, you will need to shut off your PC.
When you bring it back up, your computer will recognize the USB's as new and re-install them itself.
Please note, while I have had this occur on more than one PC, I did run into a problem that when I went to uninstall the third USB, it started to reinstall the others which I uninstalled. Sorry, I'm not sure how to turn that feature off. Any Ideas for me??

Microsoft's Elite Wireless keyboard and mouse is an excellent combination for use, according to your criteria. It costs less than $65.00 and is easily connected to replace a wired keyboard and mouse.
I have been using two of them for years now, and have never had a problem with them.
They eliminate excess wires, and work like a charm.
