Question about Maytag Atlantis MAV6000 Top Load Washer

Spin cycyle makes loud noise Model; MAV6300AWW

I have a 2002 model, looks like new warrenty expired. I had a service guy come out and tell me I needed a new brake and near bearings. The cost to fix $690 and he told me with a straight face. Is this something that is not difficult to do.

I also have a 2002 model that makes a terrible squeal when done agitating or spinning. It also often doesn't get the clothes completely spun out after the final rinse.

After doing some research, I too feel it's the break that is failing and adding to the fact that I've also had some mold/mildew smell issues and couple that with what I'm reading of all the other problems this machine is prone to - I'm going to run it until it won't function any more and buy a new one. I can assure you it won't be another Maytag. I can't justify putting any more money into this one.

I had my first Maytag machines for over 20 years with no problems, so that's why I chose to purchase another set of Maytags. Not again. As another has said, why just not buy a cheap machine if you are going to have to replace these higher end models every 5-6 years anyway.

SOURCE: Maytag washer makes loud grinding noise during the spin cycle

if it's making a noise then either your drain pump bearing is going out or your thrust bearing is going out (assuming the noise happens in both spin and wash). Tip the washer backwards so that you can get underneath of it. Take the belt off and spin the pump pulley on the right side. This should spin effortlessly.

The middle pulley is the trustbearing pulley. Spin this--- one direction it should have a little bit of resistance--- the other should have more resistance

SOURCE: Loud noise during spin cycle (Bravos washer) was

Similar issue, lot of racket on final spin and was told only option was a $280 whole tub assembly. Dissasembled tub and removed bearings from shaft. Took to local bearing warehouse and got replacements for <$25. The small one was a Nachi Quest 6005-2NSE9 and the large one was 6006-2NSE9. It took me @ 4-6 hrs in total and had to work to get top bearing onto shaft but much more attractive option than replacement or whole tub. Extremely irritated with Maytag and will NOT give them another dime. A appliance less than 1.5 yr old should not have these issues - cheaply made. Is a shame as Maytag used to mean something, it meant quality but not anymore.

see this steps and fix it. God bless you

Tub Bearing

If the washer is making a loud noise the tub bearing might be worn out, this is a common problem. The bearing can be replaced. On some models the bearing is part of the outer tub and the outer tub will need to be replaced.

Rear Drum with Bearing

If the washer is making a loud noise the rear drum with bearing might need to be replace. On this washer the bearing is not sold separately, the entire rear drum will have to be replaced. This is a very involved repair and will require disassembling most of the washer. However, the problem is going to get worse very quickly and so either the drum and bearing will need to be replaced or the washing machine.

Bearing

If the washer is making a loud noise the bearing might be worn out. As bearings wear out from friction they gradually get worse and worse until they fail. In the meantime they get louder. If the noise primarily happens during the spin cycle the bearing is likely the problem.

Drive Pulley

U-Joint Kit

If the washer is making a loud noise the U-Joint may have failed. This is the primary drive mechanism for the agitation motion in this washer. Although this is not a very difficult repair for a DIY'er with some experience, the part is expensive and so it may be worth considering a new washer.

Motor Coupling

If the washer is making a loud noise the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and transmission.

Clutch

If the washer is making a loud noise in the spin cycle, the clutch assembly might be worn out. The clutch assembly makes the connection between the transmission and the inner tub. It is designed to allow the tub to get up to the proper spin speed gradually. As the clutch wears out it may become loud during spin or just after the spin cycle finishes. The clutch is not repairable, if it is loud or not working properly it will need to be replaced.

Drive Belt

If the washer is making a loud noise the drive belt might be defective. Over time the drive belt will dry out and start cracking, eventually a piece of the belt can break off resulting in a loud noise whenever the motor is running.

Transmission

If the washer is making a loud noise the transmission might be worn out or defective. There are many other more likely causes for noise from a washer. If the noise turns out to be caused by the transmission it may have to be replaced.

Drain Pump

If the washer is making a loud noise the drain pump might be going bad or might have something caught in it. Remove the drain pump from the washer and inspect it carefully. Look for anything that might be caught in it, a piece of wire, plastic, etc. If nothing is wrong with the pump, but it's still noisy it will have to be replaced.

Drive Motor

If the washer is making a loud noise the drive motor bearings may have worn out. Washer motors are normally almost silent when they run. If the motor is run without a belt hooked up to it and it's loud it will have to be replaced.

Whirlpool Model #: WTW4800XQ making a loud grinding noise during or at end of spin cycle. Help!

I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.

"howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
