Question about Maytag Neptune MDG5500AW Gas Dryer

1 Answer

Maytag MDG5500AWW dryer will not ignite at all

I removed the front face and held the door button and tryed to start the dryer and the flame does not come on nor does the ignitor. The drum turns and the exhaust is feeding out of the vent with no problems but no flame. I recently (1 month ago) changed the ignitor, high temp cut off, ignitor sensor and thermal on the exhaust side so alot of sensors are changed.

First, unplug the dryer. Then you need to lift the top of the dryer. Two spring clips between the top and the front panel hold it; push them back with a putty knife or similar tool to "pop" the top and let it hinge back. The heating element, thermostat and thermal fuse will be visible to the rear of the drum. The thermostat is attached with a single 1/4" screw, and getting it out of the way will let you remove the screw that holds the heating element in (you did unplug the dryer, didn't you?). Very gently manipulate it till it's out and out of the way. The panel that holds the thermal fuse is in the right side of the box for the element. It comes out by lifting it up and out. The repair parts come as a kit containing a thermal fuse for an electric dryer, one for a gas dryer, and a thermostat that works for either. If you don't have a local source, this site can sell you the parts kit very reasonably. I paid more because I needed the dryer fixed that day! Replace both the thermal fuse (the one with the pink dot) and the (bigger) thermostat. Reverse the above directions and put it all back together. That should have done the the trick.

Also, as several contributors and my parts store counterman so correctly advised me, be sure to clean out your exhaust ductwork. Your fuse probably blew because the air wasn't being exhausted properly, allowing the dryer to overheat. Mine wasn't blocked up this time, but it was blocked up last year and I suspect I weakened my fuse then.

I have a neptune mdg5500aww dryer, goes on, glowing igniter... but does not turn on the gas... what is wrong

Hello,

Their are 2 possible things wrong;

1) Does the igniter just stay on or does it glow and go off usually within 1 minute?..if the igniter just stays on and never goes off the FLAME SENSOR will be the problem
here is what the flame sensor looks like oldtech2332_86.jpg
2) if the igniter does glow then go off but no flame..the coils that open the gas valve are bad
here is what they look like oldtech2332_87.jpg

The part numbers are;

FALME SENSOR 338906

GAS VALVE COILS 279834

Mdg5500aww lp gas dryer heating problem it fires once but dosent burn long clothes dont dry help

When a gas dryer starts and the burner does not stay lit more than one minute the flame sensor is not detecting the flame to as a by design safety feature the burner is automatically shut off. It is not sensing flame so it is shut off.

This is the most likely suspect. http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-mdg5500aww-%3d%3di2681&PartID=2681

BEFORE you change this part make sure that the outside vent flapper and the ducting form the back of the dryer is free of lint. Disconnect the dryer vent and try it with nothing connected to the dryer. Also check around the lint filter area for lint especially in the bottom. If there is not a lint or ducting problem then by all means change the flame sensor.

Thanks for using FixYa!

Maytag Neptune MDG5500AWW gas dryer ignites, then flame goes out

The 'radiant sensor/ needs to be replaced. This sensor tells the system that the flame is lit and everything is good. Go to repairclinic.com

Internal gas leak of Maytag MDG5500AWW

if the flame is not a clear blue,rather an orange/blue or orange, the gas is not being completely combusted, either the burner orfice tube needs cleaning or the air to gas ratio is off and needs more air intake and this can be adjusted also

Maytag mdg5500aww gas dryer sensor

First of all shut off the power by pulling out the plug.

If you are sure of the sensor issue then you need to remove four screws on the inside of the door. Two screws are located on the left and two on the right, look at the hinge and you will find two. The door will lift out when you remove the screws. When the screws are out of the front, the front panel can be remove by pulling on the outside surface.

Mdg5500aww no heat / flame.

Yes, that open switch is the high limit thermostat. this will shutdown the unit and prevent it from heating. you must replace the open switch(thermostat) asap and, replace the thermal fuse as well.

OPEN THE DOOR AND REMOVE THE TWO SCREWS IN THE MIDDLE OF EACH HINGE. LOOK AT THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE OPENING AND REMOVE TWO SCREWS FROM THAT SIDE ALSO. PULL FRONT TOWARD YOU FROM THE TOP. IT IS HINGED AT THE BOTTOM. ONCE THE TOP IS FREE, LIFT THE FRONT OFF THE HINGES. THERE IS A CLIP HOLDING THE TOP TO THE CABINET AT THE FRONT CORNERS. REMOVE THE SCREWS HOLDING THE CLIPS IN PLACE AND SWING THE CLIPS TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT TO REMOVE THEM. THE TOP SHOULD SWING UP AND TO THE BACK AT THIS TIME. IT IS HINGED AT THE BACK.
