Question about Lionel Cw 80 Transformer
I have a new Lionel set with a CW-80 transformer. At first it worked fine. Gradually it began behaving strangely. More throttle was needed to get the train moving, train speed changed abruptly without any throttle change, the reverse function became erratic, and then the engine stopped moving. It's not dead completely, lights and sounds still come on, but erratically. The power to the track never shuts off completely like it used to. Even at zero throttle, lights and sounds still come on.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I did the same thing as brian-sw. Opened the unit, removed the old in-line fuse and added an external fuse holder to make it easier to replace in the future. Transformer is difficult to open unless you have the triangular security screw driver. Security bits can be purchase from Harbor Freight but you will need to adapt them to fit into the channels where the screws are recessed. It certaintly would have been nice if Lionel installed an external fuse or circuit breaker. Guess they didn't want to loose the repair business.

SOURCE: Lionel train power issue
Answer a number of questions:
Is the tranformer power adequate for the train and is it a working tranformer?
Will the train run by connecting the wires directly to the two points of the train (wheels and center rail connector)?
Are the tracks new?
Is the lockon new?

You should be able to. The Lionel transformers all put out AC power, not DC and many Marx and American Flyer transformers will work too. The real question is total amount of power being drawn and whether or not you have the wattage to match your engine and accessories. With the CW-80 though, it should put out plenty. I run my pre-war 1666E engine pulling a full compliment of metal cars with no problems using a CW-80.
