Continuous input of h key at any prompt (windows or DOS)

Short beep is also heard when in windows for each h key displayed. During boot prior to PBR done message continuos beeps for several seconds.

Full virus scan, spyware scan and chkdsk of notebook hard disk using clean machine

Hi paul229

The h key on your notebook keyboard is stuck. Try tapping it a couple of times. Other wise you will have to take in to a repair shop so that they can have a look at it for you.

this will vary depending on your computer and operating system

Run System File Checker. From a DOS/Command window type: sfc /scannow

To open a DOS window, boot in safe-mode by pressing F8 repeatedly during the boot process (prior to seeing the Windows splash screen), then once in Windows go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

I have a message that says ..loading PBR for descriptor 2...done, when i turn my laptop on and thats as far as my laptop will go. It is a insprion 5160


PBR is the partition boot record and holds information regarding how to boot.
Dell systems use three partitions on the Hard disk - descriptor 1 is the Dell Utility partition, 2 is the XP partition, and 3 is the Dell Restore partition.

The error you are getting is due to a corrupt boot record.

Try this:
1- Start up the computer and click F12 to give you the boot-up options.
2- Insert Windows Installation/Recovery CD into CDROM, choose CDROM boot option and click enter.
3- Let the installation process continue until it prompts you "Press R to repair". . .this should then take you into the DOS mode.
4- Type in FIXBOOT and when prompted, press "Y" to start creating the new boot partition. If everything goes right, you should get a message saying the partition was corrupted and a new one was created successfully.
5- Remove the CD and reboot your system, everything SHOULD be ok now.

N.B: Dont try a FIXMBR or you'll loose you hidden dell partitions, meaning if you haven't backed it up onto DVD, you cant go back to the original factory settings if you ever need to.

How to install windows xp sp2 by using dr-dos


1. Check your BIOS to be sure your computer will boot from a CD. Enter the BIOS setup by pressing the "Delete" or F2 or "F12" key, or as directed at the startup screen, immediately after booting. Set the first boot device to "CDROM" or "DVDROM" instead of "hard drive" if it isn't already.

2. MS-DOS command prompt

Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your CD or DVD drive and restart the computer. When prompted, choose to start from the MS-DOS command prompt with CD support. The MS-DOS command prompt will appear in a moment.

3. Start SMARTDRIVE by typing "SMARTDRV" at the DOS prompt and pressing enter. You don't have to run SMARTDRIVE, but copying the files will be much quicker if you do. The computer will display the DOS prompt again.

4. Enter "CD I386" at the DOS prompt to change to the directory where the setup program starts.

5. Enter "WINNT" at the prompt to start Windows XP setup. The installation program will copy files to your computer and then display a message requesting to reboot.

6. Press the "Enter" key to reboot. The setup program will start again and check that your hard drive format is compatible with Windows XP. If not, it will guide you through partitioning and formatting the drive and then ask you to reboot once more.

7. Press "Enter" to reboot. The computer will restart in Windows XP mode and automatically start the Windows Setup Wizard to detect your hardware and finish the installation.

HP Pavilion N5445 will not boot into XP. While booting then Windows Logo is displayed for a couple seconds and then a blue screen flashes momentarily (too fast to read), then give a display of...


Boot your computer with that disk then enter in dos prompt then type in prompt "chkdsk /r"
Then press "y"
then it fix error on harddisk after complete that process resatrt computer then check.
if you still face same issue then you need windows disk then boot computer with that windows disk and follow direction then choose "r" for "Repair previous windows then it repair your windows then you get your windows again.

Installed a new hard drive


Well, since the new hard disk is not formatted, and there is nothing currently on it, you will not get a dos prompt or an operating system detected. What you need to do is insert your Windows XP disk, then reboot the machine. When you see the HP screen, tap the F12 key, which will take you to a boot menu. On the boot menu, choose your CD drive, then the computer will boot from the windows disk. From there, just format your disk, and install Windows.

that may be because of a bad connection with the harddrive thats easy to fix you just take the harddrive out and blow the connecting surface clean then it should behave normaly agian:)

Run the PSA Diagnostics and Obtain the PSA Error Code

To run the PSA diagnostics and obtain the PSA error code, perform the following steps:
Shutdown the computer.

Press and hold the <Fn> key, then press and release the power button.
Release the <Fn> key when the lock lights above the keyboard begin to flash or Diagnostic boot selected is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.

Release the <Fn> key.
The PSA diagnostics sequence begins.
After approximately 2 minutes the system produces a number of alert tones.
After the alert tones, the system produces either a series of low beeps or error codes.

Note:
PSA diagnostics will prompt for input during some tests. The resulting error message does not necessarily indicate hardware failure.
For example, input is required during the color bar test. Failure to input a response will eventually result in a timeout error: 1000-0333 Graphics test timed out waiting for keyboard response. This does not indicate a graphics failure has occurred.


Note the sequence of beeps or error codes.

Initialize LCD BIST Diagnostics



You can initialize the LCD Built-in Self Test (BIST) in two ways, depending on the revision of Pre-boot System Assessment (PSA) diagnostics:
PSA versions 3019 and greater run LCD BIST immediately after failing the color bar test, via user input of <N> or waiting for it to time out prior to generating the 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 error. PSA version 3019 became available in November 2005 on various Dell laptops. The PSA version is upgraded with the BIOS.

With older versions of PSA diagnostics prior to November 2005, LCD BIST runs after responding with a <Y> after receiving a 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 error code.
To initiate the LCD BIST on PSA versions 3019 and greater:
Boot to the PSA Diagnostics.
Watch the screen and listen for the color bar test prompt tones emitted by the PSA Diagnostics. If the screen is visible, one will see the PSA diagnostics draw a series of multi-colored bars across the screen. When completed, a prompt asking if the pattern was seen appears, accompanied by a brief series of tones.
Press <N> or wait approximately 30 seconds to fail the color bar test.
Watch for the LCD BIST color generation and listen for the beeps every 2 seconds that indicate LCD BIST is running.
LCD BIST runs for approximately 20 seconds, then stops. The 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 error code is then displayed when the LCD BIST is complete. If LCD BIST does not initialize, then the system may not have been upgraded to PSA version 3019.
To initiate LCD BIST on systems with PSA versions prior to 3019:
Boot to the PSA Diagnostics.
Watch the screen and listen for the color bar test prompt tones emitted by the PSA Diagnostics.
Press <N> or wait approximately 30 seconds to fail the color bar test.
The system emits a 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 PSA error after failing the color bar test. Wait for two iterations of the failure code and then press <Y>.
Note:
On a working LCD, the PSA diagnostics shows the following message:
Error Detected, continue testing? Yes or No or Retry.


Watch for the BIST color generation and listen for the single beeps that indicate LCD BIST is running.
Patterns of flashing color should appear on the screen. With every color change, an audible beep is heard. If the patterns of color do not appear, and the beeps are audible, an LCD failure may be the issue. If the patterns of color appear, a video card or motherboard failure may be the issue.

Hi dalenaftzger, windows can not load your primary partition. One of your partitions is damaged. Dell systems have more than one partition on their hard disk drives. Two partitions are hidden. Try this;
Start up the computer and press F12 key to give you the boot-up options.
Insert Windows Installation/Recovery CD into your CD-ROM. Choose CD-ROM boot option & press enter.
Let the installation process continue until it prompts you to, Press R to repair. This should then take you into the DOS mode. Type in FIXBOOT & when prompted, press "Y" to start creating the new boot partition. If everything goes right, you should get a message saying the partition was corrupted and a new one was created successfully. Remove the CD & reboot your system.

Play it safe if your system boots windows. Check windows for any updates. Run a full system virus scan. Run windows check disk & windows defrag.
Just in case the drive is starting to go. If you have a CD/DVD writer start backing up your personal data. The most common folder to back up are:
C:\Documents and Settings\ User name\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
C:\Documents and Settings\ User name\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\ User name\Favorites
C:\Documents and Settings\ User name\Local Settings\Identities
C:\Documents and Settings\ User name\My Documents
Data from any program you may have installed.

Armed with the above folders backed up to CD/DVD, you'll loose very little if you have to replace the hard disk drive.

How to get to a MS-DOS prompt.
Reason: If Windows or the computer is not operating properly, it may be necessary to get to a MS-DOS prompt to diagnose and to perform additional troubleshooting on the computer.
Solution: MS-DOS users
Windows 3.x users
Windows 95, 98 and ME users
Windows NT, 2000 and XP users
Windows Vista users
Other PC Operating System users

MS-DOS users If you are running MS-DOS with no other operating systems, the computer should be booting into a MS-DOS prompt automatically unless you have a shell or other program loading automatically. If the computer is not getting you to a MS-DOS prompt, reboot the computer and as the computer is booting, press the F5 key when you see the message "Starting MS-DOS" or the MS-DOS version. This will load the default standard MS-DOS. If you successfully get to a MS-DOS prompt and would like to prevent the computer from loading the program that is preventing you from getting to a MS-DOS prompt, or if you would like to fix possible error messages you may be receiving when booting the computer, edit the autoexec.bat and/or the config.sys files.

Windows 95, 98, and ME users If you are able to get into Windows 95, 98 or ME, you can get to a MS-DOS prompt by following the below steps.
  1. Click Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type "command" and press enter.
This will open a MS-DOS shell. However, if you are attempting to troubleshoot an issue with the computer and are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98we suggest you restart the computer into MS-DOS. To do this follow the below steps.
  1. Click Start
  2. Click Shutdown
  3. Choose the option to restart the computer into a MS-DOS prompt.
If you are unable to get into Windows 95 or Windows 98 to get into a MS-DOS prompt, follow the below instructions (Windows ME does not have this option).
  1. Reboot the computer
  2. As the computer is booting, press the F8 key when you hear a beep or when you see "Starting Windows 95" or "Starting Windows 98". Windows 98 users sometimes may find it easier to press and hold the left CTRL key as the computer is booting.

If you're attempting to get into a MS-DOS prompt to troubleshoot the computer boot the computer into safe mode. Additional information about how to get into safe mode can be found on document CHSAFE. Windows 2000, XP, and Vista users who are unable to boot the computer into Normal Windows mode or Safe mode can also enter the recovery console to manage their computer from a prompt. Additional information about how to do this can be found on document CH000627. Finally, if you are experiencing issues getting into Windows NT, 2000, or XP, it may be necessary to run troubleshooting steps from a MS-DOS prompt. It is recommended that the Network Administrator get into the MS-DOS prompt by using either a standard MS-DOS boot diskette (note: will not be able to access data using a standard MS-DOS bootable diskette) or the ERD diskettes created after the installation of Windows NT, or boot from the Windows XP CD.
