My fn key is working backwards how to fix

You need to restart (to enter in BIOS) your computer to change this.
While first black screen comes Press F2 or del (this may differ in your laptop).

If you post exact type of laptop i can see what bios you have, but you can look for yourself for it.

If a bios screen (may be unknown to you) appear then find Function Key Behavior select Multimedia Key First or Function Key First.

Function Key First

This is the default option. Press any function key to perform the associated function. For multimedia action, press Fn + the required multimedia key.

Multimedia Key First

My function key cannot control the brightness of my laptop

Are you pressing the 'Fn' key (usually blue lettering) to the left of the space bar before trying the function key for brightness?

Laptop function keys are either set to function as regular function keys or as system specific function keys, like volume and brightness control, when the system starts up. When you hold the Fn key, it makes that key do 'the other' function. These settings can be changed in the BIOS, of EFI settings. Though changing them is easy, you may want a semi-tech-savy friend to help the first time.

All the best to you,

Third function keyboard

The purpose of a laptop's function key is to activate the secondary function of any dual-purpose key.

The function key can accidentally be locked into place if you hit the wrong combination of keys so that all of the keys only perform their secondary function.

The exact process for unlocking the function key will vary depending on the make and model of your laptop and whether you have recently used an external keyboard.

1
Check the manual that came with your laptop and locate the section on the function of each keyboard key.

Open a Web browser and navigate to the support section of the laptop manufacturer's website if you do not have the manual that originally came with your laptop.

Use the drop-down menus on the support page to choose the specific product line and then model of your laptop.
2

Click on the "Product Support" link and then navigate to the "Manuals" section of the page. Click on the link to open a PDF version of the manual for your laptop.

Browse down to the section about the functions of the keyboard keys.
3

Find the sequence of keys you need to press to unlock the function key on your laptop.
Press and hold the function key on the keyboard and then press the other keys required to unlock it.
4

Try using the most standard keyboard combinations if you don't have the manual or it does not give any information about the function key.

Press the function key and then the shift key and see if it successfully unlocks the function key. Attempt using the other standard keys in conjunction with the function key, such as the "F11," "F12" and "Ctrl" keys.
5

Plug a USB keyboard into the USB port on your laptop if you have recently used an external keyboard with the laptop.

Check the light above the "Numlock" key on the external keyboard and see if it is turned on. Press the key and make sure the light is turned off and then remove the keyboard to unlock the function key.

My Samsung laptop's (np-r430-jb01ae) function keys are not working. how could i solve it?

Step 1:
Function keys are special keys used for assigning program shortcuts and specialty tasks to the keyboard. They are located at the top of most keyboards and labeled "F1" through "F12." Some keyboards may only feature 10 function keys, while others may have as many as 18. These keys often go unutilized by the average computer user, but they may have very important tasks for some users, which can lead to problems when the keys do not respond. Fixing nonresponsive or malfunctioning function keys is quite simple, and should only take a few minutes.

Connect your keyboard to your computer, and power it up. Open a program that uses the function keys such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. Check your keyboard for an "F-Lock" or "Function Lock" key. This key is used to toggle function-key support; when it is toggled on, the function keys will not work. Press the "F-Lock" key and then try using a function key in the selected program. "F1" is a good key to test, because it is set to open a "Help" document in all Microsoft software. If the key does not work, press the "F-Lock" key a second time, and test the keys again. If the keys still do not work and you are running the Windows 7 operating system, you may need to install a "hotfix" from Microsoft to fix the key functionality. Navigate to the link entitled "Microsoft Support: Some Function Keys do not Work Correctly." (See Below.) Some function keys or keyboard shortcuts do not work correctly on a computer that is running Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975741 Resolve unexpected Function (F1 - F12) or other special key behavior on a Microsoft keyboard http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894513 Click on "View and request hotfix downloads" located beneath the title of the article to access the Microsoft Hotfix database. You may need to restart your computer after the installation is complete. Your function keys should now work properly.

Aspire 9420 function keys

Are you talking about the colored icons on the function keys such as the wireless, the brightness of the screen and the volume of speakers? If so, you have to Press and Hold the FN Function key at the lower left portion of the keyboard then hit the function key that you want.

Notice that the color of the FN key matches the color of the function you want on the function key. Anytime you see that, you have to Press and Hold the FN key.

Some systems might have the task with a square around it on the function key. In that case you would Press and Hold the key at the lower left portion of the keyboard that has the square on it.

My function keys on my presario cq58 compaq laptop are covered with volume helpmenu and more stuff, so i can`t get press f1 and make it work.

The icons you see on the function keys only work if you press the Fn key (lower left of the keyboard). Otherwise, each key functions just as it should--as a Special function key with a number on it.

You can change the settings by going to BIOS. To go to BIOS, restart the system and as soon as you restart, start tapping the <F2> key located on the keyboard. This will take you to BIOS.
You can use the Function Key Behavior setting in the System Setup (BIOS) utility to configure the media control keys. The options in the Function Key Behaviour setting are:
