Question about Computers & Internet

Open Question

I have Toshiba M45 laptop, the screen starts up black with white letters asking for safe mode and 2 other questions. This happened after the computer was unplugged, battery died within couple of minutes and won't restart. Usually I could just pop the battery in and out, but this time it did't fix it. What can I do to get it running again?????

Try loading it into safe mode, to do this turn off your computer turn it back on and as it starts up hit F8 over and over until you get a black screen with white text that you can scroll through. Then look for something that says "Start windows in safe mode" and select that with the arrow keys to move and the enter button to select. If windows does not enter in safe mode, you may want to post clearer information as to what happens when it loads/doesn't load.

Can't get to login window

Blue screens are normally critical errors. If you have loaded any new hardware to your computer lately or some software packages you will need to uninstall them.

Try starting windows in safe mode by pressing F8 continuoulsy until you hear a beep. This will start the computer in safe mode and everything will look big on the screen, ignore that for now. While you are in safe mode uninstall anything that you have loaded prior to this error. Be it software or hardware.

If you have not loaded anything recently then try restoring your computer to an earlier time when you know that it was working with now problems.

Once safe mode boots go to Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore and choose a date when you know that the computer was running okay. Once the restore has taken place the computer will reboot. If asked what mode you want to start in choose start windows normally.

Hopefully this will help you resolve your problem.

Try starting in the Safe Mode; you can access a short menu using either F5 or F8 during the first few seconds after power on. That will load very little of Windows and you can troubleshoot from there.
You might first try booting again and recording the last lines of text as this may also be a clue to the problem.

Starting Up

If your machine can't start in safe mode, you will need to reinstall Windows. When you get to the point where it asks you where you want to install, it should offer you the choice of "repair installation" - if you opt for this, you won't lose any of your data or settings.

Toshiba M45-S331, Black screen

I just went through all this myself. First I had the inverter replaced ($200) and it worked great for a week, then the screen went out again. It turned out that the LCD needed replaced ($200 more, labor comped from the first no-fix). There's a problem with the Toshiba LCDs that makes them burn out sooner than other brands. Since the replaced screen, no problems (2 months). Sucks, I know.

You need to do a recovery using the recovery console. There is an option during startup, if you are running XP or later, to press F11 for emergency recovery.

Press F11 and choose the option to recover and backup.

This will backup all files and programs currently installed on your computer.

After the recovery process finishes, you will have to go through the process of setting up your computer, like you did when you first bought it.

After you are all setup again, it is a good idea to create recovery disks under the 'Start' menu, 'Recovery' option.

Do you hear the cd/dvd working? Is the machine booting to the cd? If so, boot using the WINXP cd. When it comes to the install screen say yes to a new install, it will ask you to accept the license, press F8. XP will then check for previous versions of windows already installed. If it finds one, select "R" to repair the existing copies of XP. You may need to reactivate your copy of windows and redo any updates but thats no big deal. Now if none of that works try the following: Can you access the start options menu when the machine boots by pressing the F8 key as the first toshiba screen is shown keep pressing F8 until a screen appears that shows: Safe Mode Safe Mode w/ Networking Safe Mode Command Prompt disable auto restart and some other entries Choose safe mode with command prompt. it will look like an old ms/dos window. type CHKDSK /R Send me any error messeges you have received or any other info you think may help. Let me (again) know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
