There are language settings. Go to the main menu and rotate through to the pliers/screwdriver icon. (settings) Click the right button to select the icon with two sliding tabs. (device settings) Scroll down 4 selections to language selection. Select English.

Do what is said above, but you need to press the down arrow button FIVE times - or rather it is the sixth setting in the menu.
The fourth setting says "PictBridge" then something in Japanese. TWO down from that setting is language. Then choose English.
Phew! That was annoying.

I suddenly had error messages in Japanese (not my language) and nothing I did could get me back to the home menu to change it. The following worked for me.
First you must reset. Turn the printer off.
Hold the Stop/reset Button (red circle in the triangle), press On/Off and get the indicator light green.

  1. Hold the Power Button, release the Stop/Reset Button.
  2. Not releasing the Power Button, double click Stop/Reset and release both buttons.
  3. Click Stop/Reset four times
  4. Press the On/Off and this should at least show the Home Menu (in Japanese still) ie all the icons in a circle.
  5. Follow the steps given by ruffus1979 but language is actually the 6th setting so click down 5.

To change the language of the LCD on the printer, Press "Home" wait for 5 seconds then select the icon that looks like a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. Next, press the right arrow to select the icon that looks like a bar with three sliders on it. Press down four times, then press OK. This will bring up the menu to select the correct language. In Japanese, the word "English" looks like this ?? or ???.

Printer reset itself in Japanese

My Canon Mp600 has reset itself in Japanese about 4 times over the last 18months, so I now keep a set of instructions taped to the side of the printer. Switch on the printer and get it to the home setting by pressing the HOME button and press buttons as follows:
1. Press the RIGHT arrow on the central wheel until you get the SETTINGS option (spanner & screwdriver icon). Press OK.
2. Press the RIGHT arrow on the central wheel once to select the slider icon on the right hand side. Press OK.
3. Press the DOWN arrow on the central wheel FOUR times. Press OK.
4. Select ENGLISH from the list of languages. Press OK.
5. Attached these instructions to your printer so you have them to hand next time it goes Japanese!!
