Has 4 slots. ive installed 2 512/s pc2700 400hrtzs ram. board came with 1 256 333 hrtzs i belive.im in stalling them in dimm 1 & 2. both connecters are gold, as are boards. the board reconized (version a07) the change after rebot. however widows(xp pro) says im running at 256k still, system infor inside pc confirmed it. however the checker here reconised that there was 1gig. what gives?
Thats because your are trying to install two memory card for different mhz bus speed for eg 256 mb of 333 mhz and 2*512 of 400 mhz go either for forur stick on 256 mb of 333mhz or go for 4 stickes of 1gb of 400 mhz it will work

Re: OptiPlex GX270 mini tower
Remove the 256mb memory and insert the 512mb memory in slot1 and see whether it works. Please note that the memory needs to be in pairs. I think the GX260 is mini tower has two different moles 1) PC3200 compatible with memory - 184 Pin DDR3200 400MHz 2) PC2700 compatible with memory -184 Pin DDR2700 333MHz Please enter the service tag on dell.com and find the manual and the right memory for your PC All the best!

There should be 4 DIMM slots - two with white tabs and two with black tabs. DIMM 1 should be the white tabbed slot closest to the processor. Slots 1 and 3 (both white tabbed slots) should have RAM installed first, then slots 3 and 4 for additional RAM. If Slot 1 already has RAM in it, pull it out and push it back in to reseat it. If that doesn't work, replace the RAM in Slot 1.
Here I have found the technical specifications for this system, but for informational purposes it is pentium 4 and celeron 478pin intel only. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx270/en/ug/specs.htm
