Question about Sigma EF-500 DG for TTL Flash

Open Question

Under exposing, especially when bouncing & diffusing

Bought this new for my brother's EOS 400D, was mostly intermittently underexposing. I gave him my 420EX which works flawlessly, and I have now pinned down the problem on my 20D as follows.
1. Straight flash works ok, flash zooms ok.
2. When bouncing of roof, walls, ALWAYS underexposing (compared to my weaker 420EX), virtually useless results.
3. When using the built in -28mm diffuser, massive underexposure.
Dealer initially said he was willing to exchange it, now "to long time has passed".

Yes, at the local Home Depot or Lowes they should have them. They're usually anywhere from 3 to 8 dollars unless they're specialty (stained glass or something like that) ones.

There is a mode in which you can lock up the mirror and shutter blades so that the sensor is exposed. Use a appropriate cleaning kit and avoid touching the sensor.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

that the camera/flash set-up I use ... there are many variables - iso/metering setting/shutter settings/flash settings .
If it's a flash function problem, try this to isolate it - first, with the diffuser/reflectors tucked into the flash head, and the head straight up, with the flash set in master mode, turn it on and look on the back screen. push the mode button til you see the ETTL in the upper left of the screen .. then press the set button in the center of the dial and the nuber in the center of the display should flash (+0) while the light is flashing, rotate the dial to change the setting (i usually under power by 1/3 stop. Play with the exposures a few times to get the feel for what the EV shifts do to your exposure. generally speaking, for interior low-light, i prefer to bounce off the ceiling (if low ceilinged), if there's too much direct it will give you an uneven and predominantly underexposed image.
if you prees the mode button you will come to the same options for adjusting the output in manual mode, but it will not work with the autoexposure in the camera.
Try playing with the ETTL settings
I think the problem may be that you have somehow altered the power output setting on the 580.

Turning on infared on my Canon EOS 400d DSLR

To the right of the LCD there are some small buttons. Right underneath the AV button, there's one. Press it, and you get three choices. The right most choice is self timer and wireless. Choose that option. The remote needs to be pointed towards the eye on the camera. It's on the front, on the "motor grip". And if you leave it on that setting too long, it "falls asleep", and you have to wake it up again before it'll fire remotely.

EOS 400D Digital Camera Software

Hi
If you bought your camera (400D) new it would have come with RAW conversion software on a disk. You can start by installing this. To get the photos off the camera you should be able to plug it in vis the USB cable that came with it. The better way would be to buy a card reader. This is a lot quicker, save on battery wear and tear, or save you plugging in the power.

Alternative software would be to buy Adobe Photoshop Elements for the RAW processing. This is a good start for most people.

Canon EOS 400D LCD screen problem

There is no live preview mode on this camera. I am not sure if that is what you are referring to, but you can only use LCD for review and menu, not as a viewfinder.

The new Rebel XSi is the only one in the rebel series with this new feature.

Hope this helps!

Transfer from XTI camera to PC

Seems to be a common problem with the XTi. Some say it's designed to underexpose to avoid washing out the bright parts of scene. Personally I found it a pita. I had to PhotoShop each shot.So I sent it back to the repair facility. They re-calibrated it. Now it works fine.

Lighter Band On top of the picture

It's a shutter problem--it's not the amount of light per se that causes it, it's the shutter speed. This issue often only shows up at a few shutter speeds. My 1dsII does it around 1/125, although not nearly as badly. Apparently the shutter is bouncing or hanging up at the end of its travel. Sorry, it's either send it to Canon or learn to live with it.
