I've got a 2001 Cadillac deville and it says it's lost the IRC ID and IRC data code. any idea how that happen?


When a malfunction such as an open fuse to a module occurs while modules are communicating, a DTC U1001-1254 Loss of 000 Communications is set current. When the modules stop communicating the current DTC U1001-1254 Loss of 000 Communications is cleared but the history DTC remains. When the modules begin to communicate again, the module with the open fuse will not be learned by the other modules so U1000 or U1255 is set current by the other modules. On my 05 Ford mustang v6, my fan only comes on when i turn my AC on and makes a funny noise when I turn the AC on, diagnostic test gave me a code, u1900, what does this mean and how do I fix it?

What are the probable causes of DTC U1000?


DTC U1000 and U1255
Class 2 Communication Malfunction , Do you know what class 2 serial data communication network is ? What module set this code an what kind of scan tool did you use to read this code .
Modules connected to the class 2 serial data circuit monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the modules. When a module receives a message for a critical operating parameter, the module records the ID number of the module which sent the message for State of Health monitoring, Node Alive messages. A critical operating parameter is one which, when not received, requires that the module use a default value for that parameter. When a module does not associate an ID number with at least one critical parameter within about 5.5 seconds of beginning serial data communication, DTC U1000 or U1255 is set. When more than one critical parameter does not have an ID number associated with it, the DTC will only be reported once.
The table below list the modules on the Class 2 Serial Data Circuit that will set a U1000 or U1255 and should be actively communicating the previously described messages on the Class 2 Serial Data Circuit.

If the malfunction occurs when the modules are not communicating, only U1000 or U1255 is set.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. A DTC U1001 - U1254 Lost Communications with with a history status may indicate the cause of U1000 or U1255.

  2. The modules not communicating are the likely cause of U1000 or U1255. The modules that are available on the class 2 serial data circuit are listed in the Circuit Description.

  3. The module which was not communicating due to a poor connection to the class 2 serial data circuit may have set DTC U1001 - U1254 Lost Communications with for those modules that it was monitoring.

  4. The modules which can communicate indicate the module which cannot communicate. You must clear the serial data communication DTCs from these modules to avoid future misdiagnosis.

  5. If all modules are communicating, the module which set U1000 or U1255 may have done so due to some other condition.

  6. The module which set U1000 or U1255 is the likely cause of the malfunction.

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Record the DTCs set in each module. If using a Tech 2, use the Class 2 DTC Check feature to determine which modules have DTCs set.

Where is the Body Control Module located?


I'm just curious if your aware of the BCM function's on your vehicle an if you know what the gate way module is ? An do you know about serial data communication between modules ? An do you know what the power mode master is ? And do you know the BCM needs programming ?
The body control module (BCM) in this vehicle functions as a gateway or translator. The purpose of the gateway is to translate serial data messages between the GMLAN high speed buss and the GMLAN low speed buss for communication between the various modules. The gateway will interact with each network according to that network's transmission protocol.
One example of this necessary communication is the communication between the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) which is high speed serial data and Theft Deterrent Module which is low speed serial data. If these modules can not exchange information, the vehicle will not start.
Communication between the BCM and a scan tool can be on the high speed GMLAN network or low speed GMLAN network. If one network is lost, the BCM can still communicate with the scan tool. A lost communication DTC typically is set in modules other than the module with a communication failure.

CHECK for correct powertrain control module (PCM) and ABS module configuration using the diagnostic tool. RECONFIGURE the component as necessary. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the ABS module configuration or REFER to Section 303-01A or Section 303-01B for the PCM. CLEAR the DTC. The vehicle has 3 module communication networks:

The diagnostic tool connects to all 3 networks through the data link connector (DLC). This makes diagnosis and testing of these systems easier by allowing one diagnostic tester to be able to diagnose and control any module on the 3 networks from one connector. The DLC can be found under the instrument panel between the steering column and the radio.
The SCP communications network will remain operational even with the severing of one of the bus wires. Communications will also continue if one of the bus wires is shorted to ground or voltage, or if some but not all termination resistors are lost. The SCP communications network allows inter-module communication.
The ISO 9141 communications network does not permit intermodule communication. When the diagnostic tool communicates to modules on the ISO 9141 communication network, the diagnostic tool must request all information, or initiate module commands.
The ISO 9141 communications network will not function if the wire is shorted to ground or battery voltage. Also, if one of the modules on the ISO 9141 communications network loses power or shorts internally, communications to that module will fail.
The UBP communications network will not function if the wire is shorted to ground or voltage. The UBP is different from the ISO communication network in that it allows intermodule communication.

The class 2 serial data line communicates information between the modules. Each module connected to the serial data line is assigned a recognition code, or address. This code is used in order to identify which modules are communicating. Modules communicate with each other by periodically sending state of health (SOH) messages. When the ignition switch is in RUN, each module that is communicating on the serial data line sends an SOH message every 2 seconds. This ensures that the system is operating properly. At key on, most modules must learns the initiation data from other modules on the serial data line. When a module requests initialization data from another module, and that request is not acknowledged after 5 seconds, the module stores class 2 initialization error DTC U1255.
Conditions for Setting the DTC

Do you know about communication networks or serial data communications on vehicles , these let the scan tool communicate with the different modules on the vehicle ! Newer vehicles have several, PCM - powertrain control module , Anti-theft module , Air bags , antilock brakes , Body control module or in the case of ford a smart junction box . an some others !
Communications Network Vehicle communication utilizes both International Standards Organization (ISO) 9141 and controller area network (CAN) communications. ISO 9141 is used for diagnostic use only, and CAN is used for many modules to communicate with each other on a common network. CAN in-vehicle networking, is a method for transferring data among distributed electronic modules via a serial data bus. Without serial networking, intermodule communication requires dedicated, point to point wiring resulting in bulky, expensive, complex, and difficult to install wiring harnesses. Applying a serial data network reduces the number of wires combining the signals on a single network. Information is sent to the individual control modules that control each function.
The vehicle has 3 module communication networks:
  • ISO 9141
  • Medium speed (MS) CAN
  • High speed (HS) CAN
All 3 networks are connected to the data link connector (DLC). This makes diagnosis and testing of these systems easier by allowing one scan tool to be able to diagnose and control any module on the 3 networks from one connector. Codes U1XXX (where XXX stands for several possible numerical digits, 001 - 254) are communications fault codes. The first part (U1) tells you that there is a communication problem with one of your many onboard control modules. The second part (XXX) or in your case, (041) tells you which module is not communicating. It can vary from year to year, model to model. so without knowing the year and model of the vehicle we are talking about, I cannot tell you which one.

In any case, there is a module that is not communicating with the other modules that are sharing information through the Class 2 serial data circuit. One module uses U-codes to tell on the other modules. For instance, If you got the U1041 code out of scanning the Engine Control Module, you can bet that the Engine Control Module is not having a problem communicating. If it was, you would get a non-communication fault from your scan equipment and the ECM would not tell you anything. Instead, the ECM is telling on the module that is not communicating properly .

I like to call these codes the 1-800 codes...THE PHONE LINE IS DOWN... lol ;)
