Hi how are you?
I have a Toshiba Satellite M40X-RS1, and it will not start up. Then fan will start and then it will stop after a second. All lights indicate things are fine. I have tried with just the batterie and with the plug, and same results. I was wondering if you might have an idea what the problem might be or how I can test it too see what the problem is.

Re: Computer will not start up
Since your fan works, we can assume the power is fine, so the next probable cause is the main board (where the processor, memory, etc are). Unfortunately, there is no way to test it (unless you have a spare one).

whats happening is that the cpu is overheating and shutting down the computer due to your fan not spinning, if you wish to test this remove the bottom panel and remove the fan and its cooling tubes should all be one part (quite easy 3 or 4 bolts) and blow on the cpu or put a pedistal fan facing it or any other form of cooling that wont damage it, and try to start it if it boots for a while it is the fan and you will need to replace it, i had this exact problem yesterday
Sometimes viruses can trigger slow start ups. Try running your virus scan. also, you should make sure that your memory is working correctly. When you have a memory stick that has failed, its hard to tell if you have over 2 gigs of mem installed but, when you start it up, it will struggle during the process.
