Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
My microwave stopped heating a couple of days ago. It has power and appears to be functioning normally except for the fact that the food comes out cold. When I first start it sometimes hear a snap, like an electrical spark. Don't know if that makes any difference.
I browsed some of the similar posts and followed the instructions to take off the control panel but I don't see the diode. It's possible that it is in behind the fan but I cant see much without removing the first layer of components.
I hate to just throw something out and replace it; it seems so wasteful. Is it worth dismounting and taking in for repairs?
Some other specs:
Year: 1999,120V, 60Hz, 1.5KW, 950W (it says both, not sure what that means)
Sorry, but your subject line got cut off.
But assuming yours is a GE model, you can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
Either will tell you where the high voltage diode is. You may have to pull the oven out of the wall to get to it for testing.
If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.
You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.
I would suspect a shorted or blown out high voltage diode.
Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:
