MP3 players can only play music files in mp3 file format. That is why downloading from Itunes do not work, it is the wrong file format. You can download mp3 music files from the Internet or convert your CDs into mp3 music files onto the computer and then copy them to the IRiver. For instruction on converting music files to mp3 file format, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

this problem i have when i am using my cell phone for mp3's i dont know if this helps you much but you might have to drag and drop your files manually to a music file everytime i upload mp3's i end up dragging them to the right location ...hope this idea helps you.
Download and install iTunes.
Grab songs from a CD using Windows Media Player, or sign up for an online music service (or purchase songs directly from iTunes).
Click on the icon of the iPod.
Click on music - add the folder in which your songs are stored.
Better yet - read the full version of your user's manual.
To download music into your mp3 pplayer, you first need to download music to your computer. So you can download music to your computer from any music sites like www.123musiq.com or download.music.com and save it in the folder you want. Now when you open, "My Computer" , you will find a folder named after your connected mp3 player. Now copy the songs you want and paste it into this folder. Now you will have all your songs into the mp3 player.
You won't need to download or install any programs if you have Windows Media Player on your computer. You can use other programs but WMP is probably the easiest!
Plug in your MP3 player using the USB cord (should be in box)
(If your songs are already in Library skip this step). Click "File" (top left hand corner) then "Add to Library..." Click "OK" WMP will now find all music on your computer and add it to Library.
If the internet is connected WMP will attempt to find song info such as title, artist, album etc. Otherwise right click on song and click "Edit"
Click on "Sync" tab (top of player). A sidebar should appear with "Creative zen.. etc" written on the top.
Drag songs into sidebar.
Click "Start Sync"
The songs will now download onto your MP3 player.
To organise your files into folders etc. go to "My Computer" then "Creative Zen etc" then "Music" and create folders (right click "create folder") copy, paste, and drag your songs in folders as you like.
You can now unplug you MP3 player and turn it on!
Please reply so I can know if this information was helpful or not and can help you further.
Mostly you pay, but there are a few free sites still left.
Use Windows Media Player to transfer music and delete songs
As far as downloading songs, you can sign up for a wide number of music services - each one has a different download method, and the company website will explain how to use it. The problem with this RCA player is that it was tied to Yahoo!'s Musicmatch Jukebox svc, which was cancelled in October 2007, so you will have to find another music service. Some music services will recognize the RCA player directly, and you can use their svc to download the songs directly to your player. Other services you will have to download the songs first, and then transfer them to the RCA using Windows Media Player afterwards.
if you already have songs in your computer
connect your mp3 player it will say open folder answer yes, then click on the corner to lower or move your window drag your song from your computer folder to that window usually e or f. to drag the song you need to click and hold down your left mouse button on your song and move it to your e folder then release button.
another way is by click right button on song then choose copy from the list then go to your mp3 folder e and right click then paste.
