The rhythm is completely different - other bag styles don't punch back. Training with a double end punching bag will teach you to bob and weave, slip and duck, keep your hands up and to move your head.

I just bought and installed my first punching bag at home. I thought it would be good for releasing stress. Where do I begin? Is there a proper technique to using a punching bag?

The best advice I can give you is to take your time. It is very important to take some time to first develop proper body mechanics of punching before hitting away. Remember to stay focused on your balance, keep your wrists straight, protect your hands, and never push the punching bag.

Double-end punching bags consist of a leather ball attached to two chords attached to both the ceiling and floor. They rebound based on how much force is applied and are great for reflex, reaction and coordination training. They come in 3 standard sizes - 6/7/9 inch bags.

I know that there are two main types of punching bags - hanging and standing. I also know about speed bags. Aside from these three, are there any other types of punching bags I should know about?

There are a few different types of punching bags, aside from the ones you mentioned. You can also find banana bags, teardrop bags, body bags, angle bags and double-end bags.

How do I properly punch a punching bag? Is there a technique to it or I do I just start punching away?

Before you go "punching away" make sure to wear the right protective gear (gloves, wrist wraps) to insure you do not get injured. To begin using a punching bag, aim for the middle of the bag (generally a softer area) and hit for three minutes. Then rest for a few minutes. Repeat this on and off procedure until you feel that a good amount of stress has left your body. At this point it would be a good idea to take a few deep breathes and drink some water.
