My microwave started making a loud noise, and it looked liked there was something flashing inside. When it stopped there was a strong smell coming from it. Should I continue to use it?
I have an Amana RadarRange, and it also has started flashing and grouning. The interior is clean and the unit is less than 3 years old. Looking for a possible cause and solution so I do not have to pay the outragious service call and repair fee. I would probably end up being less expensive to buy a new microwave, but that would be a crime given the young age of what I have. chet
I had the same problem, but there definitely was not any metal in the microwave. I also noticed that one of rack supports turned grey and was hot after using the microwave for only 60 seconds, while none of the other supports were hot. I'm replacing mine since I can't take that smell of burning plastic and have read that faulty microwaves can cause major fire damage.
Yes. Regardless of what may have happened to your microwave, if it continues to work reliably then by all means use it. Microwaves are so inexpensive that they are hardly worth the cost to repair them. So keep using it until it no longer works. The flashing inside may have been a small metallic object such as a wire bread wrapper.......these things arc like crazy with white flashes and produce a strong odor of burnt plastic from the coating put on them.

A different Maytag Service Tech showed up, looked over the situation and concluded that the problem started when the microwave was assembled at the factory. He stated that the nylon harness was routed across the 35 watt halogen bulb and that, over time, it melted and then that caused the bulb to burst. He is ordering a new harness and will be installing it on May 2. Hopefully, this will correct any problems.

I disagree completely .A microwave with this problem isn't safe unless a qualified servicer examines it,and not by phone. To use the customers information they have given ,how can you say "by all means use it"??????I would be out looking for a job if I took that risk upon my self.Safety is critical ,and this person is trusting what they feel they can trust.Without inspecting this in person I strongly feel ,that the risk is possible and dangerous as hell.C,mon ........

I suggest that there is so much dirt on the back side of the roof-liner (plastic-like patch on the inside roof covering the microwave outlet). Find means of removing it and clean it with spirit or if ti shows sings of burning, replace it, but in most cases, cleaning it will do the trick.

This is dangerous stop using it. the problem is arcing inside metal of the microwave. There is a cover (waveguide)inside that needs to be replaced and all the food and junk around needs to be cleaned then it will work just fine. Since you posted this in 05 you may be dead by now of a kitchen fire that consumed your home and several others in your neighborhood. If you are still out there though good luck. I had a situation where upon opening the door to this oven, there was a "large flash". Needless to say that the bulb no longer worked. However, after having a warranty service check, the bulb and holder (which got fused together due to the high heat) were replaced. This happened about 2 weeks ago (the unit was purchased about 10 months ago). Yesterday, while a Maytag warranty service tech was diagnosing a refrigerator problem, I asked him about the microwave. He looked at it and said that he would order "some part" (related to my bulb, etc.).
After he left, I opened up the lamp housing and saw some other wires in the microwave. When I pulled it up to look at it, I noticed that the nylon (or teflon) wiring harness had been burned to a bubbly charcol black mess. In my opinion, this could only have been caused by some "extreme" temperature condition. So, I have contacted Home Depot (where I bought the Maytag appliances). They called the service company to come and look at the situation. They will be at my house on Friday.
