Need to get laptop connected to wireless connection
We have a WRT54G router. I have a laptop here in the office that recognizes our businesses wireless capabilities and is asking for a passphrase or network key. I am the first person here to attempt this. No idea what my laptop is asking for. After I get this phrase is there any additional set up required?
I have a new laptop ACER and have an older linksys wrk54-g and after is set it up with wep it gave me a number a 20 number code and wep it supose to be only 6 am I right

Re: Need to get laptop connected to wireless connection
The passphrase only means that there is a security enabled on that wireless network. You are correct, you need to know that passphrase for you to be able to successfully connect your laptop to that wireless network.
If you need more help on how to get this passphrase just let me know.

is your office camera connected to the wrt54g? do you know the ip address of your camera? the port number will come from your camera. If the camera is connecting to the wrt54g, you can open the router configuration page and input your settings there. Call linksys technical support for that. If linksys cannot help try http://technicalsupport.blog.friendster.com
That just depends on how you want to connect with your laptop. If you need wireless access, then you have to use the WRT54G, because the RT31P2 has no wireless capabilities. If you are connected via ethernet cable, then you can simply take the WRT54G out.
If you like to read up on different scenarios, here is my favorite page.
click on Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connections -> Properties -> In the box in the middle scroll to and click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" -> Click Properties -> Make sure "Obtain an IP Address Automaticaly" is Ticked -> make sure "obtain dns address automatically" is Ticked. -> ok -> click ok
See if you can connect
Click on Start -> Run -> Type CMD and hit enter. a command box will open. type in IPCONFIG/ALL
Please copy down the following numbers --- IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway DNS Servers

I wouldent to that , not that way! since they track all activity that passes the router they track your laptop aswell.
If i where you i would have bought me a 3G broadband dongel for my laptop. No one sees you, no one tracks you, and you can use it wherever you are and you are anonymus
Using a company router for private surfing is always risky, IF you by mistake surf to an infekted site, your company will all over you.
the wireless network is secure... you need talk to the person that set it up to get the network key
if that is not possible let me know ... there are ways around that
and after you have the key it should hook up with no problems... as long as the correct driver is installed for your wireless
