Question about Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook

1 Answer

Black screen Fairly new Dell Vostro 1700, I moved and the booklets are packed away. I have a problem that I need assistance with asap. I started up my computer and it starts as usual, the windows XP pops up and the little bar at the bottom is moving, then when it usually shifts to the desktop icons it goes black, I can see the curser and can visually see it moving all around but nothing else. Help anyone!

    If the computer is on the screen will flicker for a second and then go black. Or if it's hibernating when you turn it on the screen won't come back. I have to shine a lamp directly onto the screen to find the mouse and restart or shut down the computer. Sometimes on start-up it will turn on and then flicker for a second and then disappear again.

I had a much older dell laptop (2001?) that did this. For whatever reason it had 5 or 6 drivers loaded for the monitor/display. Of the five, four were identical. I disabled the identical ones and kept the normal one enabled and this solved the problem.

HELP HELP HELP!! I've a Dell Vostro 1700, that

It sounds like someone has put a password on your BIOS on your laptop.

The BIOS is what boots up the laptop before Windows even begins to start.

This password will not let you do anything until it is removed.

The best way to fix this without knowing the password or who set it, is to discharge the battery that keeps the BIOS settings in check.

Basically, to do this you need to remove what's known as a CMOS battery from the laptop and leave it out for 5-15 minutes.

The CMOS battery for your laptop, and how to remove it, is located here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/multilang/SM/coinbatt.htm#wp1179960

Remove the battery for 15 minutes, put it back in. Your BIOS settings at this point will set back to default and the password will be gone.

Bought used dell vostro 1700, wasnt told about the bios password.

Hi Jonnymac93,
the fastest way to clear a password would be to remove the cmos / bios battery. The manual for the Vostro 1700 can be found at the following link;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/en/OM/pdf/TT565A01MR.pdf
If you prefer the manual in htm, click this next link & choose htm format listed on the site;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1700/en/index.htm
Go to page 182 & 183 for instructions. The manual call this, Removing the Coin-Cell Battery.

Also here is notebooks driver site for the 1700;
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/manuals?~ck=ln&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

Good luck Johnny!
Run into trouble, post back.

Here's a couple of quick things to try. Remove the memory modules and reinsert them. Do the same with the hard drive, CD drive and such. Something may have gotten knocked loose during the move.
Hope this gets you back up and running!

Dell Vostro 1700 won't startup - woman in need of help!!! :'(

Don't choose safe mode.

If you have in the F8 options, a Recovery Console select that and run at the command prompt:

chkdsk /r

That will look for and repair disk errors.

Otherwise, look for and select Restore my computer, from this F8 menu.

Failing that you will need a copy of Vista or XP but if you have a 64bit OS like Vista64 you will need a copy of that.

Let me know what happens. But, I won't be online for much longer so I'll send a message to a friend of mine in Ireland who can help you further since he's in a different time zone.

Regards,
Worldvet
