Every time the thermostat tries to turn on the heater, the pilot light goes out. Thermostat and thermopile/coupler are brand new

I have a similar problem with the same heater. My main burner actually comes on and stays on until the thermostat turns it off at the proper set point. However, the main burner comes on with such force that the pilot light is blown out. The main burner flame keeps the thermocouple generating adequate voltage until the thermostat shuts it off. At that point the pilot has to relit for another cycle to take place.

A cozy tech hinted that the control valve has been redesigned to meet a new pollution standard and this is a recurring problem. The only solution appears to be replacing the control valve, which costs about one-half the price of a new heater.

If this describes your problem, I would look for another brand of heater.

I have a Rheem Classic Super Quiet 80 gas furnace (for heat). The fan stops when the "heat" turns on.

Any time I ever had trouble, first thing to suspect is the thermostat.
They lose contact sometimes and sometimes you tap the face and they work til next glitch.
If the thermostat has some years on it,go ahead and replace it.
Can't you just leave the heat and fan in auto? That would be best,I think. don-ohio

Lighting the pilot, starting the fireplace

Turn on the gas, hold the pilot flame button down and light the pilot flame, continue to hold the button for at least three min's, release the button pilot should stay lighted.

My Coleman furnace 4322/729 model lights the pilot but won't cut in . What could be problem ? Cleared lines Complete

Gas valve not opening? Does it have the exhaust blower that pulls vacuum switch allowing burner to light?
(1) Thermostat not working? Has to complete the circuit in or gas valve to open.
(2)Can be a stuck or bad gas valve. Try tapping the side of the gas valve body while thermostat is calling for heat. Tapping, not pounding. Like lightly, yannow? don-ohio (:^)

I need to know if a mercury thermostat is bad will it allow the ac to come on but not the heater

need to know what thermostat you are referring to
the coolant thermostat has no connection to the ac system
if it is the ac thermostat the it maintains the cabin temperature by activating the ac compressor as required
if you are referring to climate control then that controls the heater flow to keep the ac temperature at a set temperature with the ac compressor operating all the time
so as an answer to you question , check the climate control module

Cannot get gas to flow to pilot flame with main valve parallel to gas pipe. Is there something I must push to make gas flow to the pilot flame pipe?

you said, in effect: Cannot get gas to light the pilot flame even though manual supply valve is open. Is there something I must push to light [ignite] the pilot? Permalink
The gas supply valve is open, and the pilot gas cutoff valve is open but [it seems like] gas will not flow to the pilot flame because it will not light when I supply a match or lighter flame. I remember there is a button or something I need to press...but where it it? I cannot find it.
