I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop with Windows XP Media Center edition 2004 and a Sony dcr-hc30E handycam. I linked both with a 4 x 4 pin i.Link cable (I think firewire). I put the handycam into Play/Edit mode. (Also USB cable didn't work and produced similar errors)
The computer recognises the handycam because it is showing up under Scanners and Cammers as a Sony DV Camcorder. But if I try clicking on the image, it gives me a Microsoft error "Video Preview Failure. Creation of the video preview failed. Please check the device connection and make sure that the device is not being used by another application or user." (It wasn't).
If I try using Sony's Picture Package, it goes through the motions of creating a video but when it comes to writing it to the hard drive, the program appears to loop.
If I use Windows Movie Maker, I get as far as capturing the video. The program rewinds the tape on the camcorder automatically but once it tries to transfer the video, it displays "an unknown error has occurred".
I have tried restarting computers, updated drives and googled every error message I've got. No good.
PLEASE can someone help. I need an international doctor to review the video before end of week and am desperate to get it up on the computer to transfer to him.

Dear Sir,
I saw DCR-TRV350 but it does not have any option for Computer connection...
SOURCE: how do I transfer video
If your transferring the video via USB then with Sony Cams you will need to download the drivers and install them (the sony website or google with normally have them)... then restart you computer and attempt to capture again using WMM.
PP seems corrupt, try reinstalling it and/or look at troubleshooting. if still f**ked then try rolling back your drivers to your camcorder and reinstalling them with a clean package.
- if you need details with rolling back drivers, google it.
