Oil Pressure I just bought a 03 Ultra Classic, when bike is reved or we are riding, the oil pressure gauge is around 32, however when the bike is @ idle it drops way down. What could this be? The gauge, the oil sending unit, or hopefully not the pump? Have you ever run into a situation like this?

Very common on h-d big twins for the last 75 years or so. These bikes have a dry sump oil system which means you have 2 oil pumps, feed and scavenge. The feed pump is very puny compaired to the scavenge, so at idle (especially when hot) it carries only a couple of pounds of pressure and that is all you need. The scavenge pump has a much greater capacity because if it can't keep up the crancase will start filling up and the crank will start slogging through the oil, killing performance. These bikes are equipped with hydraulic valve lifters which will start clanking loudly if you have a real oil pressure problem. Enjoy your ride and don't sweat it.

Why my oil pressure raises while idle, then falls when engine is reved

Likely electrical issue or bad fuel pump which draws excessive amps when reving up thus blowing fuse and creating drain on electrics making oil gauge reading drop.

Low oil pressure and small leak

Oil pressure on these bikes is around 30 PSI at 2500 RPM or higher when fully warmed up. This will take 20 miles or more. At idle on fully warmed engine, pressure can be as low as 7 PSI depending on oil quality. It should however increase to around 30 when reved up. You did not specify where your oil leak is for me to comment on.

Oil pressure gauge

You have oil pressure and the gauge is working and no noise
that's great! Only worry if the gauge stops working.

Hi Anonymous, start by checking oil level in tank and it is between the add and full mark. With engine at normal operating temperature 180-230 degrees and the use of a 10 micron synthetic media oil filter, oil pressure will be 30-38 psi at 2,000 RPM and 3-5 psi. at idle. The oil pressure light is designed to come on at 2 psi. or less. To accurately test oil pressure remove oil pressure sending unit and install known good oil pressure gauge that reads 0-50, there might possibly be some plumbing required for hard to access points. If you are out in the middle of nowhere and there is no cell phone service and your oil pressure gauge isn't working and your oil pressure light is burned out, despair not, you still have one last line of defense left HYDRAULIC LIFTERS.as long as those tireless workers are quiet, you have oil pressure, maybe not much, but enough to get you down the road at a slow to moderate speed using the least amount of RPMS as nessary. Good luck

What weight oil were you running?

I don't recommend synthetic oil in H-D because it is too slick for the type bearings Harley uses.

We like to run Castrol 4T in our Harleys.

Cant think of why it would boost your pressure after getting hot

Oil pressure

Your Bike is a dry sump system oiling system which simply means that the motor needs to be revved up to get oil to the top of the motor. The readings that you see are actually normal (look closely at the gage and you'll see that you are actually are around 5psi at idle and in the 30psi range while moving). Great Bike!
Also you might want to checkout the free website for harley owners www.hdforums.com for insight on your bike.
Be safe!
