Well if you can save the file but are unsure how to store and keep the file on your pc and have it be safe I would recommend something called Folder Lock. I will provide you a link.

Link: http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/

Summary:

  • On-the-fly 256-bit AES encryption (military standard) for data security.
  • Just as Lockers in physical world, different users can create their own Lockers. A single user can create multiple Lockers with different passwords as well. With Folder Lock, you can choose either to encrypt using 256-bit AES on-the-fly encryption or lock files, folders and drives anywhere on your computer. Each Locker can contain your encrypted files as well as your personal list of locked items.

Password Protect...I use Vista Home. When I go to save a file. FILE-Save AS the window that comes up has an option of "Save with Password". This option is ghosted out and can not be selected.....

There are a couple of ways to do this.

Try going to Tools;

Then Options;

Click on security Tabs;

you will see this

msword-specify-password.png
Got to Password to Open;

Click Ok;

Fill it in and you will see this;

msword-confirm-password.png
Re-enter your password;

Click Ok.

Save the file like you normally would.

This should resolve your issue.

Make sure you check your registry for Windows Vista for errors to see if that is causing the problem also.

I am including another link you may be interested in for your IE passwords also.

How do i find all read only files in computer

A read-onlyfile can be opened and read but no changes can be saved over theoriginal file. This comes in really handy for documents,spreadsheets, and other sensitive files that you don't want messedwith.
Files on a CDare read only since you can't modify them while they are on the CD.If you want to change them you must transfer to your computer thenuncheck "Read Only" in Properties. When you transfer a file from CDin Windows 98/ME it stays read only, so again, you need to "un-readonly" it. (Win XP is smart enough to undo this whentransferring).
To undo readonly, right-click the file and select Properties (orAlt+double click) from the resulting menu.
cdr1.gifNext, uncheckthe "Read Only" checkbox on the lower part of the Propertiesscreen. Hit OK and you're all set.
cdr2.gifNote that ifyou have a bunch of files sitting together that are all read-only,you can "un-read only" them en masse. Hit CTRL-Ato select all or hold down Alt and select onlycertain files, then right-click any file and follow the stepsabove.
You can alsouse this process to make files you want protected "read only" sothat no one accidentally modifies them.I hope it will help you.
