Dell notebook keyboard malfunction

Apparently something was spilled on my dell inspiron 1525 keyboard. a couple of the keys were not working well. i purchased a product from radio shack called, ''control/contact cleaner and lubricant which the sales person assured me would solve the problem. it didnt. it actually made it much worse. now i have about 6 nonfunctioning keys including the spacebar. i had to purchase a usb keyboard to use. what caused the keys to stop working and more importantly, can they be fixed or do i need a new keyboard?

the service manual explains how to replace the keyboard, not individual keys. i guess thats what i'll end up doing.

    thanks

Space bar on my Inspiron 1525 just stopped working unless I really really pound on it. Makes typing VERY annoying! Don't like hearing I have to replace entire keyboard though. :(

Well i think the best way to deal with is to service the notebook in a repair shop.Ask first how much will cost and if is worth do the repair. If not buy another.

I suspect just as you suggested something was spilled on it. Other than loose keys laptop keyboards are generally not repairable. They are not that difficult to replace, but check the Service Manual before deciding to do it yourself.

The root of the problem is most likely in the underlying key contacts, not the keys themselves.

Dell inspiron 1525 functions keys are not working

The two most common input devices for the Dell Inspiron 1525 are the keyboard and mouse.

Although the mouse is an almost indispensable tool in navigating through programs and websites with your laptop, the keyboard offers quick shortcuts to open and manipulate files and information.

An unresponsive keyboard can indicate a deeper problem and require troubleshooting to narrow down the cause and find the proper solution.

Laptops are collections of complicated computer components and sometimes a file or two can become damaged and affect the way the machine behaves.

The first action to perform when things aren't working right is to reboot. When your laptop restarts, it essentially resets all the files and programs to the "starting" position and corrects any small errors that may have occurred during the last session.

Eliminate Conflicting Hardware

With an almost unlimited number of accessories, programs and software available for your 1525, it's possible something else installed on or connected to your computer is interfering with its ability to properly communicate with the keyboard.

Shut down the laptop and disconnect everything attached to it.

Power up and test the keyboard.

If it works, start reconnecting each accessory, one by one, until the keyboard stops working. You've found your culprit.

Try External Keyboard

To determine whether the problem exists in the keyboard itself a hardware problem or with the software that controls keyboard function, attach an external keyboard and see if it works.

If it does, the problem with your 1525's keyboard may lie in the keyboard itself, such as a loose cable.

If the external keyboard doesn't work, the problem may lie with the operating system's software that controls keyboard function, such as the drivers.

Update Software

Sometimes a laptop will stop functioning properly due to out-of-date drivers or other software. Always check Microsoft's website for any updates available for your operating system and check Dell's website for updates to the drivers and BIOS installed on your system.

In many cases, installing the latest updates will help correct issues and keep your system working smoothly and efficiently.

Check for Damage

Physical damage, such as a liquid spill and short circuits, can prevent the keyboard from operating properly.

Any amount of liquid spilled on your keyboard can cause a short circuit to the components and a sticky beverage such as juice or soda can cause the keys to stick and become unresponsive.

Clean the spilled liquid from under the keyboard fix sticky keys.

Laptop repair shops can do this for you if the task is out of your comfort zone.

Hope this helps

DELL INSPIRON 1525 HELP

It should be a simple fix. Start your laptop and pay attention to the screen. Press the F12 key (or F11) to enter "SETUP" then find the NUMLOC command and make sure that its DISABLED or OFF. This will turn this option off andyou will only be able to use the number's keys on the top of the keyboard. Be careful when entering SETUP. You don't want to change anything you don't have to.

If you spilled something on the keyboard it's pretty obvious the source of your problem ;)

I would suggest swapping the keyboard out with a new / used one from ebay, it's cheap and easy.

Here's a tutorial :)

Hope this info helps, and if you have any other questions please reply to this thread.

Dell Inspiron 1545 space bar, ''n'' and ''b'' keys suddnly don't work

There isn't any "Known Issues" that I am aware of with that model. Try re-seating the keyboard cable, see if there is any difference:

If no difference, contact Dell if under warranty. If not new keyboards are about $20 on EBay
