Question about JVC RX-318 Receiver

I hooked up 4 ohm speakers by mistake and now have no output is there fuses in output cuircuit

Yes inside should be 2 for the speakers and phen a power fuse

Can it drive 4 ohm speakers?


If you connect 2 4 ohm speakers in series it will work. You shouldn't try a 4 ohm by itself. You'll kill the output stage of the amp.

Connecting a single 4 ohm speaker?


Gotta be careful here....the headphone output won't drive a speaker - if you already have all other speakers connected on the back as designed, you really don't have anywhere to connect a 4ohm speaker. The "front" speaker jacks have an "A" and a "B" section but they appear to be in parallel so you really shouldn't connect a 4ohm speaker to "B" for example if you already have speakers connected to "A". The combined impedance would be too low for the amp design.

I want to hook two speakers on each terminal (L/R).


The correct way would be to hook only one speaker to the powered outputs and use PRE-OUT outputs to connect separate amplifier (or active speakers).

For 2 speakers to work connected to the same powered output of receiver, their impedance would need to be high enough. Yamaha receivers officially support impedance >= 4 ohm for front speakers. If you would connect 2 different 8 ohm speakers, the combined impedance could be theoreticcaly 4 ohm, but that depends on many parameters. On low volumes it should work, but could overload the receiver if used for louder volumes.

Also note that the impedance is a function of frequency (specific to every speaker), so for different frequencies the power from receiver would be devided differently between the speakers and the sound would not be good.

How do i connect a sub wooferto my reciever


I own 2 of these Pioneer VSX-D903S units.

The only way to hook a powered subwoofer up to a VSX-D903S is if your subwoofer is equipped with amplified/speaker level terminals on the back, in addition to the line-level input. If you only have a line-level input, do not attempt to hook it up to this receiver.

If you're lucky, and have speaker-level inputs on your powered subwoofer, you would use the amplified terminals (connect to B-channel on the receiver). DO NOT connect anything to the line-level connection.

Alternatively, you could build two unpowered subwoofers, then set the receiver's Impedance switch to LOW, then connect one enclosure to each of the "B-channel" outputs. Connect your regular left and right speakers to their corresponding "A-channel" outputs. [Impedance range: 4 Ohm minimum, 16 Ohm Maximum]

I have a panasonic SA AK25 with no manual.There are 2 sets of wires coming out of the speakers .how do i hook them up at the back ,thanks


you need a basic meter to ohm out the wires. most speakers ohm out around 8 ohms. some speakers have wires that can hook up to more speakers. others use an external power source to boost the output of the speaker. I would ohm out the wires and find the closest thing to 8 ohms. then with a small 1.5 volt flash light (AA) or (AAA) battery you go across the wires that you think are the load (speaker) if you hear a poping or crackle sound then you have found the wires that are the speaker wires. this would be the wires to hook up to the amp.

Whats the rating on the Plasma? How many watts at 4 ohms? If the plasma is rated 100 w at 8 ohm... hanging a 3.4 ohm load would put a lot of strain on the plasma's output amp. At 3.4 ohm the amp would be trying to delive close to 200 watts at full power. But it depends on how hot you normally run the volumn. Remember an amplifier output is AC volts. 1 ohm of resistance is close to a dead short. The amplifier would have to work its *** off to supply that type of power and would probably burn the output op-amps. If the outputs burn & it pumps any DC current through the speaker wire..the speakers would be toast...if not catch on fire. Try to keep the speaker load at or very cloe to the plasma's output load rating. Also if the plasma doesn't state it will handle loads down to 2 ohms...It probably won't.

"Biwiring' is not an accepted term; I suspect you mean 'parallel.'
There are three different ways to connect loads (that is all your speakers are to the amplifier); 
Assume that the speaker outputs are marked + (plus) and - (minus). 
Series - if you connect a + to a - which is then further connected to another plus + which is then connected to another minus, this is a series connecton and if doing this with speakers, each load (let's assume 4 ohms) is additive; in other words 4 + 4 + 4 = a 12 ohm load. The current flowing through each load is identical.
Parallel - In this case, all the + are connected together and then to the + on the speaker connection. All of the - are connected and then also to the minus of the speaker output. In this case, all of the current is shared and not necessarily equally; the lowest load impedance (this is a complex combination of resistance, inductance and capacitance) will draw the most current. If you have all 4 ohm loads, they will all draw the same amount of current. If you have a mix of loads, the final result will be lower than the lowest of the loads.

Series & parallel circuits 
In your case, if the output is specified as (for example) 4 ohms and you parallel two 8 ohm speakers, it will be a 'matched load' and safe for the amplifier. If you add a third speaker of 4 ohms, you will have a load well under 4 ohms, below the rating of your amp, and you risk damaging the amplifier if the output is not adequately protected against mismatches.
For your situation, you should look at the math on the Wikipedia link and avoid causing your amp to fail.

Trying to hook up jbl sr4732 speakers the highs are to loud compaird to the bass or lows. im only using a onkio with a 100 watt per speaker.


These JBL speakers are not made for a home stereo reciever. It could be part of the problem.

I do know that they have a high frequency input and a full range input on each speaker.

I am going to guess that maybe you have them connected to the high frequency input.

Are you using 1/4 inch jacks connecting to the input of the speakers?

I don't remember these speakers having a input for wires.

You may have another issue using these speakers with that reciever.

The JBL speakers are 4 ohms each, it is very likely that the onkyo requires 8 ohm speakers.

Look on the back of the Onkyo where the speaker jacks are at and see if it says anything about the minimum impeadance.

The impeadance is the ohms. Most home recievers are not designed for anything less than 8 ohms. Some are, but most are not.

Using 4 ohm speakers on a system that requires 8 ohm speakers can cause damage to the reciever. Mostly at higher volume levels, it will cause the reciever to overheat and shut off, maybe short out a channel. It pulls 2 times the amount of current thru the output transistors as 8 ohm speakers.

Multiple speakers in same outlet


How this reciever is set up is there are left and right A and left and right B Only one 8 ohm speaker should be attached per outlet. if you exceed that your driving the channel at a much lower resistance then the units designed for and the channel will burn up.. Oh it might last a short time but bet your last dollar it will burn up the channel if you over load it. Please dont forget to rate this.
