With your motherboard, the motherboard chipset consists of a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip; for the motherboard chipset,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg
The Northbridge, and Southbridge chip are so aptly named; because of the relation to how they sit on the motherboard.
If you looked at the motherboard as a Map; the Processor (CPU), sits due North. The Northbridge chip is located close to it.
The Southbridge chip sits South, or towards the bottom of the motherboard.
The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
Handles the Processor (CPU), Ram Memory, and HIGH-speed graphics.
AGP and PCI Express are HIGH-speed graphics technology.
A PCI graphics card inserted into a PCI slot, or using Integrated Graphics; is NOT high-speed graphics.
The Southbridge chip handles the Slower capabilities of a computer.
1) Anything inserted into a PCI slot, or connected to the PCI bus.
2) IDE bus
3) SATA bus
4) USB bus
5) Ethernet bus
6) Audio (Sound)
Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
[Just for edification while I'm here;
The I.C., or chipset used for graphics; is the graphics chipset, or more properly known as the G.P.U.
Graphics Processing Unit,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU
The Intel Core i technology, did away with the Northbridge chip.
It also uses QPI, or Quick Path Interconnect; instead of a Front Side Bus, (FSB),http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_QuickPath_Interconnecthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem_%28microarchitecture%29http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/535
Plus you have an LGA 775 processor socket, and the Intel Core i processors use either an LGA 1156, or LGA 1366, or LGA 1567, processor socket,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1156
