Question about Alcatel Speed Touch Home Modem

Sudden slowdown in broadband Download speed

Alcatel Speedtouch 510 supplied by, and connected to Demon. Should be running at about 4Mbps but about a week ago I noticed a sudden drop in speed to about 150kbps !! Demons answer was "power off and on twice then wait 3 days" I have done this twice with no result.
I ran the BT test routine (it is on a BT line) which came up with the following data:-
Your DSL connection rate: 3744 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 832 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 104 kbps

Obviously it is this "IP profile" setting which is wrong, and I am sure that there must be some way so set this correctly from my PC. I would appreciate your advice please.

I have alread done this and posted the result in my question download is 110kbps and upload is 680kbps

  • russ_mcanull Dec 16, 2008

I have already approached the provider as described in the question, with the results described there.

  • russ_mcanull Dec 16, 2008

No, I have never heard of torrents, and never download such stuff the line is simply used as a connection for email and the odd bit of web work.

  • russ_mcanull Dec 16, 2008

I only had two numbers in the test and I gave you both of these in my last reply.

Does nobody know anything about the Alcatel router which lies at the heart of this problem? I can test a million times, but the answer is always the same, and Demon tells me the problem is with the router setting.

I do intend to go over to a 20Mbps fibre connection but this is going to take until after Xmas and I would like to get some reasonable use out of my present connection until then.

Hi go here, http://www.dslreports.com/stest, then run the tests on the site, if you aren't getting what you are supposed to, try the DR tcp, you can manually adjust the mtu's and the rwin, those are really the only ones you will see much improvement, but everything you need is on that sight. Are you running a router? if so use different port for your torrent as the block the default ones, let me know if you get things right, take your time, everything you need is on that site, been using it for 10 yrs, peace,Gym

I mentioned that also in my answer if running a router you probablly need to enter the settings and manually set them to the correct ones they gave or should have provided for you. Look in the router should be something like 198.162.1.1

This isn't so much a solution as it is a note. You obviously know quite a bit about what you're talking about so I'm assuming you have had your run-in with torrents.

A lot of broadband companies, both DSL and cable (I use comcast) are putting a choke on users downloading torrents. This is their legal solution to legal ramifications from "allowing" their customers to download music, apps, etc illegally.

Hypothetically speaking, since torrents are not encouraged, the only way to circumnavigate the problem is to download from encrypted users only. Usually in preferences.

Hi, I would like to see your results from www.speedtest.net you can copy a link from the results and attach it to this page as a link.

    Thanks.

  • Ekse Dec 16, 2008

    Your DSL connection rate: 3744 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 832 kbps(UP-STREAM)

3744 kbps is correct for 4MB which is around 4000 kbps. Seems there is no problem.

  • Ekse Dec 16, 2008

there should be a reset button in the modem, hold it down for 30seconds to restore the factory default settings incase you have somekind of a ip profile which limits the speed to 130Kb/s

Sounds it is your modem. I had a similar issue with my old one. I had a westell 6100F and now have a 6100G that helped. My company had to replace about 150 of line about 1000 Ft away from my house. The cable was in a storm drain and it was getting wet and interupting my internat connection.

Ip 3rd time is chainging.all time speed is going down

what ip are you referring to? most internet service providers provide dynamic ip addressing to their residential customers and dynamic ip addressing means that your ip address will be changed periodically. Static ip addresses (ip adoes not change) is usually provided for business consumers.
as for the speed, if you subscribe to 4Mbps speed package, what it actually means is that you willbe getting UP TO 4Mbps speed. that would explain why your speed goes down. you will not always have 4Mbps.
