If you take the back off you will proably see that the feet are bent. Try to straighten out as much of the metal as you can. The compressor is a motor that sits on springs to keep it quiet. If you get the compressor to sit level the banging should stop.

Good day,
If it makes the clunk or banging noise when the compressor is shutting off, then yes, internal spring or springs inside the compressor have broken.
Only solution to that problem is a new compressor.
P.S. these things can run a long time with this condition, but ultimately .....

When the refrigerator finish cycling, the compressor shakes and rattles. What is going on?

Inside the compressor , the motor is held by 3 or 4 springs . When 1 of those springs break (either from rust or time) the internal motor will bang the inside of the compressor . This does not mean the compressor will quit , only noisey when cycling off . Only way to stop the noise is to replace the compressor OR try shimming up one of the compressor mounting legs (will take trial and error to determine which leg will stop the banging ) . Always reinstall the rear cover even when checking .

Whirlpool top freezer refrigerator- compressor makes a loud noise

The compressor is that black casing you see at the bottom of your refrigerator - inside this sealed case is the motor assembly which stits on 3 or 4 springs that act like a cushion - you have a little gap at the bottom where the lubricating oil is present. Your springs have likely worn out and when the compressor shuts off the assembly is banging against the rigid casing make that loud "klonk" or bang noise. It IS normal for compressor to make some faint "tick-tick-tick...tick.....tick" when shutting off, but loud banging, bell sounds, etc, means the assembly is banging on the case from the inside - you can indeed live with the noise, your compressor will function normally, probably for months, or even years - it can also keep wearing out and one day the noise might get very loud (like a very high humming noise) - There is NOTHING that can be fixed, you either pay $400+ to change the compressor or buy a new refrigerator - If you DO replace a compressor usually the replacement will be noisier - Keep a thermostat inside your refrigerator at all time to make sure your compressor is still keeping your refrigerator and freezer cool.

Refridgerater shuts off with a bang

When you look at the compressor of a refrigerator, what you see is actually just an outer case. The compressor is inside that case, supported on four springs. If you give a compressor a shake (even a new one) you will hear the inner compressor part knock on the outer case. Sometimes, if a spring brakes or gets weak, when the compressor stops running, the momentum will then cause it to strike the outer case, causing a loud knock or two. Most refrigerators will work fine for many years if this condition occurs. It is a bit annoying, but the only fix would be to replace the compressor, which is generally prohibitively expensive if the unit is no longer in warranty. Please don't bother rating this solution, as anything but a Fix-Ya lowers my overall score. Thanks.
