Video files, even of the same type, are encoded using different "codecs". If the one you need is not installed on your computer the video will not play. Google "windows 7 codec pack" and download and install. Run your virus scanner on the download before installing just to be safe.

SOURCE: Codec error:use window media player

Try using a different software to play the file, such as BSPlayer or VLC.
Also, I'd recommend you installing a codec pack, such as K-Lite Codec Pack. Windows Media Player MIGHT play the file once the codec pack is installed!

Pelu.

I am having trouble accessing videos/pics. on my laptop

Since your question is not so clear, I have to assume myself that pictures and videos saved on your phone can't play on your computer after they are transferred to your computer. The message simply means that the codec installed on your system does not support the media type that you are playing. If you don't have any other player installed on your system you have to try with this one Vlc media Player (click here to download). Download it, and install, now open the downloaded files (video or pic or audio) using this player. Hopefully that should work. Alternatively you can use this player instead of Windows Media Player, but on the other hand, you can still play those files using Windows Media Player. The only thing you need is to install a codec, like Klite megacodec packs, Acemega codec packs, etc.. Click here to download Klite mega codec packs Download, Install and restart your computer, now you'll be able to play any type of media file using your windows media player and other players.

If you have problem, let me know.

Good luck.

How come I can't play a video with AVCHD format on my laptop? My laptop is an HP Pavillion DV7

Each of the AVCHD camcorders ships with software designed to playback the files on your computer. Sony's HDR-SR1 and the newer HDR-SR5 both record video in the AVCHD format and ship with the Picture Motion Browser, which plays back AVCHD files on most computers. If you purchased one of the Panasonic AVCHD camcorders, the included HD Writer should allow you to playback video recorded with your camcorder.

While the bundled applications work, my personal preference, is Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra, which supports playback of the AVCHD files and a whole host of other high definition formats. In addition to playing back your HD camcorder files, PowerDVD Ultra plays back Blu-ray and HD-DVD disks (with the accompanying drives connected, of course). PowerDVD Ultra also makes it possible to expand your HD video editing options, by using the included codecs to render the AVCHD video in apps like VirtualDub.

Cyberlink PowerDVD ultra can be downloaded from here :
